Old Mar 19th, 2010, 11:07 AM        I forgot to Enrol to Vote
Although I was SURE that I already did, apparently my name isn't in their database.

Now, I have to vote tomorrow.. today... and it takes 24 hours to enrol, so I can't do it now.

Should I turn up and hope that I am enroled, or stay in bed and just pay the fine for failing to vote?

Can't help - I'm from America, land of the free, where we exercise our right to not vote, then complain about the government full-time.

I wish they'd throw people in jail for not voting - that would be awesome. Most of FOX News would be broadcasting from behind bars.

Crisis Averted.

I turned up at the polling booth and gave them my name, and when they couldn't find it on the list they used my previous enrollment from my old address. The wonders of technology!

Obviously I voted for the Socialist Alliance party. Without my vote they would take a pretty large drop in their personal percentages.

It is illegal not to vote, and they fine you $20 if you don't. I failed to vote once before (I was going through a VOTING IS WORTHLESS phase... well I guess it sort of still is, but I have changed my reasoning) and they send you a form to fill out explaining why you didn't. I filled in the blank space with "had a headache" and that seemed to do the trick since I wasn't fined.

If you aren't enrolled (I was enrolled at a different location - are you following?) but turn up to vote, then you get a ten second head start before they set the dogs onto you.

I don't think it should be illegal to abstain. I guess you can turn up and draw a cock on the ballot paper, but that still means you have to put on trousers and go to a polling station.

I bet Bill O'Reilly would even cut off other inmates. Would love to see him on OZ for ONE episode.

That's awesome. I'm glad you're not jailed.

What about that "no rules just right" slogan? I bet they really don't mean it.

Funny, here in the U.S. you're automatically registered to vote when you get your driver's license. Do they do something like that or is it a different system?

I'm still indecisive on whether it's a good thing to fine a person who didn't vote. Eitherway it's interesting. What kind of political parties do you have there? We have quite a few here in the US but the only ones allowed on television are the blues and reds.

We have a lot of parties in the US but we're actually a two party system. The ones on the tv are the only ones that matter even though they're practically the same. Don't go around acting like the US has a free, true democracy, you fascist collaborator.

The reds and blues aren't the only ones that matter. They are just the ones that are supported. It's a controlled debate. They can't allow different ideas to contaminate the prescripted theatre.

and the US is a republic. Not a democracy. We just choose our representitives through democratic elections.

No shit Sherlock. And the Democrats and Republicans are the only ones that matter because they're the ones in control.

It's a representative democracy, you pillock. If you don't like the way that guy votes, vote for a different guy. OR RUN YOURSELF!

And the ideological parties, which are the ones that aren't "the two", don't do as well because they adhere to an ideology and therefore have a smaller membership. Which is to say that they're more rigid in their ideals than Democrats and Republicans.

It's a republic. The idea of a representative democracy is a contradiction.

Democracy can only be direct; individuals voting without a representative. What is taught as "representational democracy" is more along the lines of what a republic is. I have no idea who came up with those two different forms of "democracy" but no one of any credibility actually uses those terms.

I only had a single teacher in my primary education who pointed this out so I guess if people don't read on their own or don't take classes in university that cover these things, they can't even know what form of government they live under.
