Old beyond her years

She is the most ancient child ever discovered and was no more than three years old when she died about 3.3 million years ago.

Unearthed in Ethiopia, she belongs to the primitive human species known as Australopithecus afarensis and has been dubbed Lucy's daughter, after the iconic fossil of an adult female from the same group discovered in 1974. The international team that found and studied the child's remains said its spectacular find would fill in an important gap in understanding human evolution.

"It's unprecedented to have such a complete skeleton of a young child," said William Kimbel, of Arizona State University and a member of the team.

The remains include the skull and both jaws with teeth, parts of the shoulder, the spinal column, some ribs, the right arm, some fingers, the legs and the left foot.

The discovery, published today in the journal Nature, confirms the accepted view that Lucy and her clan walked upright.

The child's surprisingly long gorilla-like arms, however, suggest they might also have been skilled at swinging through the trees, although this is still hotly debated by scientists.

This species, thought to be among the earliest direct ancestors of modern humans, had a chimp-sized brain and a protruding face.

The child's remains were first spotted in December 2000 in an area of north-east Ethiopia called Dikika by a team led by Zeresenay Alemseged of the Max Planck Institute in Germany. They have been prepared during a five-year project in which pieces of sandstone were carefully chipped away from the fragile bones, grain by grain, using dental instruments.

Several more years work is required before the skeleton can be fully reconstructed.

The child, most probably a female, and also called the Dikika girl, appeared to have been buried quickly by sediment during a flood, soon after she died.

Lucy dates back to 3.18 million years ago and is therefore about 120,000 years younger than her so-called daughter. A bone from the girl's voice box was found, the first to be discovered from such an ancient human ancestor. It could provide important clues about the origins of human speech.

Professor Kimbel said most anatomical differences between humans and our closest relatives, chimpanzees, depended on changes in the pattern of growth from infant to adult. This made the new remains an invaluable resource for studying this process in early human evolution.

Any pics of the fossil?

I thought Lucy was debunked and had something to do with pigs?

So is this girl a mutant or the ancestor of modern ethiopians or what?
Oh and the first loser to make the "blacks"and "monkeys" comparison gets slapped through my dsl.
