Thomas Hinkerberry's Different Day

It was a Thursday morning and Thomas Hinkerberry was preparing for another monotone day. His entire family dead, his friends moved; Thomas didn’t have anything but his work these days. Today was going to be a different day for Thomas however; after 5 years of work, with only 1 day off during that time due to sickness, Thomas was going to experience something out of the ordinary. To him, it seemed just like every other day. He started out with making his usual breakfast; eggs sunny-side up, a glass of orange juice, and a sugar cube to end the meal on a sweet note. He grabbed his briefcase and left the house not even bothering to lock it because he always told himself, What do I have that anybody would want to steal? He entered his car through the trunk because all of the doors had been permanently shut after several car accidents.

On his way to work, Thomas Hinkerberry witnessed something that he was not used to seeing. He saw a sparrow dining on a squirrel that had obviously been crushed by some speeding car. He had to pull the car over and get a closer look. After scaring the sparrow away, Thomas looked down upon the squirrel remains. He scooped them up in his hands and walked into the nearby woods. Then he buried the remains and cried over the mound of dirt he created. One of his tears landed on the mound of dirt. Thomas could have sworn that he saw something move under the dirt pile, but excused this as a figment of his imagination. He dragged his feet back to his car and went to work, but could not get the squirrel out of his head the entire time.

Perhaps it was this temporary exit from his normal schedule that made him go through a dramatic change. He was unable to function normally at work after this experience, and the days only seemed longer and longer. He always hated his boss for making him work so many grueling hours without a break. Plus, now he would have more free time to think about the squirrel. Sitting in his favorite chair at home, Thomas spent days thinking of how he buried the squirrel and wondered what had happened to it. He could bare it no longer, he had to know.

So, Thomas climbed into his car again and went to that spot where he had buried the squirrel. To his shock, someone or something had apparently dug up the squirrel. He ran to his car and sped home. On the way home he stopped by a gas station since he was almost out of fuel. While paying for the gas, he noticed the local newspaper’s front page announcing the murder of his boss!

He purchased this paper and took it home with him. He sat down in his favorite chair, shaking. His boss had indeed been murdered and the cause of the death was unknown. The report did mention that there was some animal fur found at the scene of the crime. It also said the company was being sold and that all employees were being laid off. Thomas instantly thought of the squirrel after reading the part about the animal fur that was found and became very frightened. He walked into his room, and on his bed there was a note written in acorns:

"Thank you. All I ever wanted was a respectable death. In return for this, I have given you life."

Sincerely,
The Squirrel.

And the moral of this story is: If you see a dead squirrel, bury it, and it will come back to life, kill your boss, and get you laid off because you shouldn't be working such a cruddy job anyway. Thanks for reading.
