The Greatest Dance EVER

IT'S NOT REALLY THAT DARK!

So how many of you remember Bruce Springsteen's "Dancing in the Dark" video? You know, the one where he looks into the crowd and spies a cute girl with short black hair. That girl was none other than Courtney Cox and most people consider this to be her first big break into the business. Well anyway, as the video progresses Bruce pulls her up on stage with him and they begin to dance. Granted, they're not "dancing in the dark" since it's a well lit stage, but nobody seemed to care about that because one look at her and they'd be all, "Awwww! Look how cute she is dancing her little heart out up there with him!"

Cut to the 90's with the show "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". It was a funny sitcom sure, but in my mind there is only one magical thing that actually made the show truly worth watching: The Carlton Dance! If you are one of the few, sad, uncultured individuals who have never witnessed this amazing spectacle of rhythm and coordination, please feast your eyes upon the following two animations:

THE CARLTON DANCE! THE CARLTON DANCE!

Breathtaking isn't it? Seriously, there never has and never will be a greater dance. Well I recently found out that Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton) actually came up with the dance after watching Courtney Cox dance in the Bruce Springsteen video. His dance is simply an exaggerated parody of what she did in the video... and somehow that makes the Carlton Dance all the more hilarious when watching it.

Alfonso Ribeiro I salute you.

Years ago, my buddy made up the best name for this dance, but it was so freaking long I can hardly remember any of it. Something to the effect of:

"The Hip-Twisting-Double-Inverted-Flailing-Nard-Twister"

Something like that. I remember actually doing that dance a few times back in the day. Ah the memories...

Re (Guest) on 11/30/2005 12:00 pm

His dance was the best thing about that show.

I have to agree, the Carlton dance rocked my face off on many occasions. But who can forget the Elaine dance from Seinfeld? That one was awesome too.

It's like a lava lamp... o.O

I never watched that show, I thought it was a waste of time. Will Smith bores me to no end too.

Looks like a classic "Up with People" group dance vamp.

Guest

What makes the dance even better is the face that he did it to Tom Jones, a God Among Men.

Guest

yourmom (Guest) on 12/01/2005 6:49 pm

The double inverted flailing nard twister was not made up by your friend. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but it was from an episode of Beavis and Butthead. They were watching a video that had the names of dances, so then they parodied it by doing their own.

Guest

max (Guest) on 12/01/2005 8:50 pm

Yea, its a video by Sick of It all where they show a bunch of different hardcore dancing styles, "picking up change", "windmill", "classic ny style" etc.

Did you know, according to wikipedia, Alfonzo HATED doing the Carlton dance?

It's still 90's sitcom gold though!

Guest

Nick (Guest) on 12/01/2005 10:21 pm

Remember the episode where Carlton accidently took meth at the school dance? I can't remember if he started doing a meth induced version of this dance, or the running man. Can anyone help me out on this?

Guest

Chad (Guest) on 12/01/2005 10:36 pm

I have witnessed the Carlton Dance and quite frankly, I loved it.And that's how I dance now.ALso I loved the Soul Train episode where Carlton actually dances instead of the Carlton Dance and does the backflip off the stage...classic.

Guest

-RoG- (Guest) on 12/01/2005 10:41 pm

I just want a list of all the episodes that he did the Carlton Dance in. I know in season 2, he only did it once (in the episode "Striptease for Two"). He also did it in the series finale one last time.

Lest we forget the Urkel Dance?
That was so damn hip the DJ at school had a song already qued up for it.
The moves were coded into the DNA of every student at the dance so that everyone there could instantly do the moves.

Or, Y'know...the Bartman, that was good too.

Guest

Cannibalizer (Guest) on 12/02/2005 3:50 am

It will always be all about the Bat-ussi. That Adam West knew how to bust a move, ladies.

I think this is rivalled by the dance from UK show The Office.
Requires real player

the kid is an unbeliveable dancer..you all do know that he was the kid who in that famous Pepsi "pre-mike's-hair-on-fire" commercial where he is on the street corner moonwalking to "Billie Jean" like michael jackson and then as he moonwalks he bumps into MJ. he could tear it up even at age 10

Actually the best dance from this show is when Carlton and Will do the Tonto dance at a strip club but this one is consistantly good. Dont ask me why I know this I just do

Guest

Nice to know that someone else (Fragrant) knows of the demented movements of David Brent. I agree, his dance definately rivals that of Carlton.

I have also enjoyed the Carlton dance but I must take issue with "there never has and never will be a greater dance". I refer of course to the Elaine dance from Seinfeld. Now THAT's some serious dancin'!

Guest

Pretty cool and funny dance, reminds me of the banana dance. I used to start dancing like the banana to make a friend laugh. Hmm, by the way, pretty cool blog design -RoG-! Simple but effective :D! I also like a lot that Monkey Island edit!

my grandma does the Carlton dance. she rocks. she is the coolest 70 year old you will ever meet. a few years ago she also got her first tatoo in honor of my aunt that passed away, a yellow rose on her uncle.

nothing beats a family get together when grandma whips out the carlton dance!

One of my favorites was when will had to take out that princess to the opera and when he was trying to get g's attention to sneak in the house he was making all those animal noises. Another one was when carlton had to stay in compton on a bet for 2 days then he became the master of there crib.

[...] So at a recent party, we talked our friends Jason (Protoclown) and Macon into doing the chicken dance (one of the few dances that rivals the coveted “Carlton Dance“). Now for those of you not in the know, the chicken dance I’m speaking of comes from the show “Arrested Development” (you know, one of the many good shows the Fox network has been insane enough to want to cancel over the years). Anyway, the character “Gob” performs this dance any time he wants to mock somebody for being afraid of something. Gob is also a magician who always comes out on stage to the sounds of “The Final Countdown” by the band Europe. Quite the spectacle I assure you. Well, someone at the party happened to get some video footage (thanks Scott) of the two of them doing this chicken dance and I decided to combine it with that song. And now, I pass this footage onto you. [...]

The Carlton dance was funny because many people had already seen people dancing like that long before Carlton. Carlton was impersonating the way white girls dance, Since his character on the show was supposed to be raised in an upper-class white area and him therefore influenced by that culture. A.k.a., "whitewashed". LOL. The hilariousness of it is because there's a black person dancing like a white girl. Courtney Cox may have been the person who triggered his memory of the dance, but in the 80s that was a popular style of dancing for white girls, at least in the San Fernando Valley/Los Angeles area.
