Title: Revenge Of Shinobi, The (2nd Review)
Author:Sega
Rom Player: Gen
Reviewer: Johnny

Synopsis: I was 6 years old. Come on. You can't do that to a 6 year old. You can't give him these nice shiny Marios and wonderful, uplifting Kid Icaruses and then SKLITCH!!

The Revenge of Shinobi slit the throat of the gaming world in the Summer of 1988 for me. The neighbors across the street had a Genesis, and I would watch my sisters' 16-year-old friend, Sam go around tossing these beautiful knives at anything and everything that moved.

I think it was the only time he ever really was able to tolerate my loud-mouthed 6-year-old presence, because I was shocked into silence.

It looked real! The man on the screen was wearing this strange looking garb...I remember it occurring to me that it slightly resembled a harem girl's stereotypical dress, with a mask hanging down over the lower part of the face.

You see, before I saw this game for the first time, I did not know what a Ninja was. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was still two years away for me. This game, which I was exposed to at the tender age of 6, starkly and viscerally depicted the killing techniques of ancient Japan to one who thought all they did over there was make TV's and bow.

Suddenly, I wanted to know everything there was to know about ninjitsu.

I didn't end up actually playing the game myself until years and years later, when I was around 18, but when I did, my childhood adoration was confirmed with something else...

This game realistically depicts how much ninja were killed in the Sengoku (or Feudal) Era, circa 500-1500 A.D. in Japan, by making you die.
And die.
And die and then die again.
You will die ten thousand deaths before you ever meet the final boss on the Hardest level.

There is no reward.
There's no secret ending.

You can use unlimited shurikens and finally see the stupid ass ending if you really want to, if you just can't take it anymore.

But for me, at least, it's not about the ending...it's about the experience. And The Revenge of Shinobi is the Ninja Experience.

I wish someone would make a Sim Ninja game, though... one that would be neverending.
