Synopsis: The impact of Contra continues on. Here, you play a gangly blonde guy with a gun who gets to run all over the place shooting things while trying to stop a supercomputer, named “Cyber Lip” for obvious, literal reasons, from wreaking havoc. It doesn’t matter really, I had to play this game all the way through before I could understand it, and even then, there were still parts that made absolutely no sense. It starts off with you getting dumped in the crappy part of town and having to shoot your way out. The rest of the game, however, takes place on this colony where the supercomputer is located. What’s unusual about this is that after each stage in this colony, you go into this elevator and decide whether to go up or down. Picking the wrong choice will dump you in the sewers for a brief battle before the next stage begins. Fortunately, “up” is usually the right choice. Anyway, you start off with a laser rifle, but go on to find an automatic, a wide shot, a flamethrower, grenades, and a bazooka. Somewhere along each level, there will be little doors with the word “In” in large, flashing letter that you enter and , according to the voice sample, reload you gun. This gives you full ammunition and shows you standing inside this huge warehouse of guns and ammo that the enemy mysteriously overlooked. For some strange reason, each gun has two different firing sounds: one for vertical and one for horizontal. While I’m on the topic, the rest of the sounds are pretty unusual. The enemies make a few groans and grunts, but you take the cake. You manage to make noises when you die, plus you say, “I’m a goner” when you lose your last life. To make matters worse, you often wind up talking to yourself, saying, “look out behind you” when a few enemies appear on the other side of the screen, “look out below” when you grab a hold of a pipe, and a simple “watch out” when a boss comes out. The enemies don’t act particularly impressed by your verbose heroics. They consist of mainly robots, but with a few mutants popping up as the game progresses. The odd thing is that many of the robots have guns, but no ammunition, as they never actually fire at you. Despite this, touching any of them, or anything remotely dangerous, will kill you. Like I said, the sound effects are good, but I seem to be getting some echoes on the automatic. The music, on the other hand, is forgettable. Overall, the game is a good shooter, but the controls are a little awkward. Regardless, getting to hear all the odd sounds makes the game worthwhile.
