Title: Act Raiser 2
Author:Enix/Quintet
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Dr. Boogie

Synopsis: Once more, you get to prove that there is a God, and that he is ready to kick ass. Act Raiser 2 picks up roughly where the first one left off: You had just finished unleashing some holy might upon the evil god, Tanzra, and were taking a well deserved rest. Unfortunately, evil gods always keep a bunch of their followers tucked away in case they ever need resurrecting, and this game is no exception to that rule. You are informed of this by a regular angel, not the little naked cherub from the first one, and are forced to take up arms against the forces of evil once again. Unlike the first one, the main focus here is the action element, and thus there are no little town-building breaks from battle. Even better is that now, you are less of a knight, and more of an actual angel. You get a set of wings for flying (well, gliding anyway), flowing locks of blonde hair to enforce that whole Aryan thing amongst angels, and you get to keep the little wings on your little headband. Unfortunately, you ditch the armor in favor of something that shows off your massive pectorals: a loincloth and a shield. Luckily, the shield is the kind that actually works, and is not just there for aesthetic value. Also different from the first one is that instead of getting to name the guy, you are given the well-traveled title “The Master.” In addition to that, you get to use magic in a different fashion than the first. You are still limited in the number of times you can use magic, but you use magic by charging up and then releasing the sword button while pressing a direction or jumping for different results. The enemies themselves are a little less bizarre, as stone throwing midgets have been replaced with jumping trolls and such. Despite this, the enemies are more difficult to overcome than the ones in the first. The sound effect are pretty much the same as the first, with some sounds like the “ha!” when you swing you sword being held over. The music has improved, in that it is now a higher quality of SNES music, if that says anything about it. Overall, the game has less of a cartoony look to it, and instead looks to more of an anime-style romp with nasty monsters and powerful magic. Basically, if you liked the first one, you might want to take a look at this one, although it is not necessarily better. Still, where else can you find a game that addresses you as ”The Master” while at the same time not being rated “A” for adults?
