Synopsis: Extra sauce action! Smash TV, in case you haven’t heard of it, is one of the all time greatest arcade games, if not the only one. In the future, well in 1999 anyway, the most popular form of entertainment is the game show. The most popular of such game shows is Smash TV, which places a contestant in a maze-like structure where they must gun down bigger mobs of enemies than those from Gauntlet and Diablo combined. While doing so, money, prizes, and weapons are placed at random on the floor to prolong the game. That last part is true to a ridiculous extent; each level gives you more money than the Gross National Product of a small nation. To top that off, you find incredible amounts of toasters, “super VCRs,” roadsters, 2600” TVs, and more. The weapons, themselves, are quite powerful, as you get spread guns, bazookas, grenade launchers, and more. Other power-ups consist of speed boosters, bombs that clear the screen of enemies, 1-ups, and keys for getting into secret bonus areas. There are regular bonus areas, too, where toasters and TVs and manner of prizes are dumped onto the screen for you to grab. This can be devious, however, because they will sometimes appear on top of normally easy-to-see land mines, thus tricking you into wasting a life to get some VCR that you’ll never learn to program anyway. The enemies are too numerous to describe, but you initially get to fight guys with bats, tanks, exploding fat men, and guys manning gun turrets. The sound effects are hilarious. The announcer will often chime in with half-baked game show phrases like, “big money, big prizes, I love it,” there is a strange grunt noise when you die and an “awww,” from the audience, and there’s surfer lingo when you pick up a power-up like “dude!” The music sets the mood for a fun time exploding various things. The only problem I had with the game is wondering how a game show was able to get a hold of such powerful military grade weapons. Oh well, if you like to shoot things and get lots of money, you’ll love this game.
