Title: Wild Guns
Author:Natsume
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Dr. Boogie

Synopsis: Be the rootin-est, tootin-est, machinegun shootin-est cowboy in some parallel universe! Wild Guns has you playing the role of either Clint or Annie, which one you choose seems to have absolutely no effect on the game except to make you look and sound different. The gameplay is reminiscent of the arcade game, Cabal, in that you stand in the foreground shooting at people in the background. You go from mission to mission with what seems to be a bounty hunter motif, as each scene will award you bonus points and such upon successful completion. The part I didn’t get, however, was the setting for this game. In addition to gun slinging cowboys and the token Mexican guy with a rifle, you are presented with automatic turrets, blimps, and strange, cowboy-esque robots. The bosses appear after the time limit for the level has passed, and for the most part, fight you mano-a-mano (or womano, if you’re Annie). The maps consist of things that sound western, like a gold mine and a train, but with giant mining robots, hang glider men, etc. Anyway, while you’re shooting at people, they will be shooting back, and thus you come equipped with the ability to double-jump and dive left and right. This can be tricky, however, as some enemies will simply shoot a single area repeatedly while another causes you to inadvertently leap into that area. Fortunately, you have your own little machine pistol-thing for putting down cowboys whose somersaults and flips make them look like circus rejects. Upon blowing up various people/objects/flying machines, you get weapons such as a faster machine gun, a shotgun, a grenade launcher, and some piece of crap weapon called the “P-gun.” After getting this weapon from a random weapon power-up, you have to use all the ammo because it can’t hurt ANYTHING. Lord help you if you get it during a heated battle. You also come with a few bombs that, when used, cause the entire background to explode. As if that were not enough, if you manage to stay alive long enough to shoot plenty of crazy robots and such, you will fill up a gage that will grant you invulnerability AND an infinite vulcan machine gun for a short period of time. I don’t know why you need both, as one makes the other all but unnecessary. The sound effects for this are what you can expect from a futuristic western: plenty of explosions and death grunts. The music is not typical western music, but more of the regular electronic music associated with the SNES. Oh well, shooting things and blowing things up remains high on my list of entertaining stuff, so I recommend this to anyone with a similar love of wanton destruction.
