Synopsis: If there is one game that no Arcade should be without, then Contra takes the cake. Of course I have played the NES version of Contra, but this version is better in my opinion. Besides this is the one game that invented run-and-gun platformers not Metal Slug, which will always be inferior to Contra even if the series was somewhat ruined via Contra: Legacy of war and C: The Contra Adventure.
Game Play: When this classic was released in the late '80s it was completely innovative especially when compared to Half-Life, Grand Theft Auto, and nearly every RPG on the PlayStation and PS2. Its controls are spectacular and the difficulty is just right. After all, this is a Dyed-in-the-wool classic unlike those aforementioned games which are overrated and boring.
Graphics: The sprites are very detailed and well-animated. The background detail is flawless at that time and this game was made in 1987. Plus, there is no sign of slowdown (unless your playing this on a really slow PC.).
Music & Sound: The sound effects were a sight to behold, but the music isn't as good as the NES version.
Originality: The storyline may by simple, but this is an arcade game and not an adventure game. Besides the gameplay was completely fresh back then, that makes up for it.
In the end, Contra is one game that no arcade should be without. It blows Metal Slug out of the water and it did what no game did in the late '80s.
Therefore, this game deserves a ten for being completely new and fun to play.
Best Cheats: The cheat that worked in the NES version will not work in this version.
