Synopsis: The Game Play
Classic side scrolling action. Set up like a comic book story line, you have to fight your way through endless enemies and face off against a Boss at the end of every stage in order to progress. Even though this may seem pretty dull, the turtles have their own personality and even their own style of moves which gives the game a bit of variety. Each boss character has a pattern, but they are constantly spouting off insults and taunting at you, which does in a way, piss you off and make you want to slap the person closest to you!
The factor of the game that makes the play so good, is the fact that it is four-player simultaneous. That way, you can get up to four people rocking on one machine, and it does tend to help with the difficulty level somewhat. When you play through by yourself, your only course of action is to hit and run, and pick up the pizza slices that will give you energy to move and finish out the stages.
You have an attack button and a jump button. With a combination press, you can do jump attacks, and a special move that drains some of your power away. Moving your hero through the stages is easily done, and there is no sluggishness with any of the attacks. A problem that does come in is the jump feature. From time to time, when you jump, you land in a bad spot and take on more damage then was originally intended, and from time to time, you can't attack in the right spot to take down a flying enemy...that'll piss anyone off!
The Visuals
This is where all of the updating really starts and you’ll be able to notice. After the first couple of stages, you’ll run into a portion of the game that allows you to travel through different points in time that range from the prehistoric age right up to the wild west. Even though these stages are pretty cool to look at the first time through, the real gem of the game is the amount of detail that is put into these places. With the turtles that move fluidly to the bosses that seem to have a life of their own, you’ll find plenty to see and watch while you’re whipping up on some robotic Foot Clan!
The Audio
The music selection is the turtles theme song played over and over again without any variation. This isn't a bad thing if the arcade is packed, and there is a ton of other things going on, but if it's just you and a couple of friends, be prepared to get a massive headache as well be annoyed! The sound effects range from short voice-overs that come straight from the cartoon series, to the thuds, crashes, metallic scraping of blades and explosions of the Foot soldiers.
The Verdict
TMNT II is a good game that carries on the fun of the original. While the game play hasn’t changed much since the first, the fact that the game is cleaned up and given some life with the new bosses and stages almost makes up for it. For those of you who like side scrolling games that need fast and furious button mashing in order to play, you’re really looking in the right spot. However, if you’re looking for some more intense side scrolling game play, then you need to check out The Simpson’s and X-Men: The Arcade Game before rolling back this way!
