Synopsis: The basic premise of this game is that you are this junk collector on a journey to reassemble some really schwag spacepod. In the beginning, you have your base ship and a basic capsule with a tractor beam that you use to collect powerups for your capsule or items to sell for cash to buy powerups with. And it must be noted that you can lose the capsule and go around in your space suit. And that's about it for this game.
It's been awhile since I've played this game, but I remember loving it in spite of the fact that so many of the features were less than maybe they could have been for when it was produced. I think I liked Solar Jetman because I have a fairly badass crap collection of my own. My room is filled with various junk items I've collected over the years, including several pounds of scrap paper and a constantly variable number of empty pop cans.
Aside from my love of collecting junk, though, the reason I'd recommend this game to others is that it's probably one of the most original space games I've ever played. Most others I've tried start you off with heavy thrusters, shields of some sort and about nine types of weapons. But not Solar Jetman. All your scout pod has is its little pea shooter. To get your shields off the first world, you gotta fight your way past a set of limpet guns. And good luck towing your boosters and map scanner back to the base ship on world 2. Did I mention that a planet's gravity plays a factor in this game? And that your pod can actually run out of gas, which causes you to loose it? Oh yes, and one of my favorite features is that you have to refuel your base ship before you can go for another piece of your space hotrod. In the final analysis, if there was ever an 8-bit game designed specifically for me, it was Solar Jetman. Just the right mix of action and strategy.
