Synopsis: The third in the series, and the best... the original Metroid was a fabulous concept: a non-linear side view game where you have to find your way around, locating and equipping various powerups, slowly transforming Samus (I have a weakness for bounty hunter chicks) into a devastating fighting machine, and finally hunt down and neutralize the bosses, destroying the planet on the way out. But it had some serious flaws, all of which are thankfully worked out in this installment. No more shooting in only three directions! No more recharging your energy five units at a time after restarting a game! Yes! In addition, there are new bosses, new powerups and most of the old ones, not to mention the ability to turn them on and off, and of course an invaluable automap. And it's got plenty of nice little touches; the layout is designed so that towards the end of the game, you have to pass areas that you had to go through earlier, avoiding the enemies that you couldn't even damage... but now you can destroy them with one shot. I appreciate that. And it doesn't get old to play the game over and over, shaving minutes off your time. That says a lot about the quality of the game.
