Title: Yie Ar Kung Fu (2nd Review)
Author:Konami
Rom Player: MAME
Reviewer: Brandex

Synopsis: I had to review this game even though someone else has already because it’s one of my all-time favorites. When my trips to Big Bear get boring (and they frequently do), I always stop by their local arcade and play this game.

Synopsis: You play Oolong, a kung fu master who can jump really high and beat the crap out of anyone. It’s a fighting game where you are pitted against a variety of armed and unarmed opponents in a one-on-one fight to the finish. So far, I’ve discovered 11 stages that seem to repeat over and over again, but perhaps I’m wrong.

Gameplay: 10/10 – I know that the controls for this game are pretty simple compared to more complex titles such as Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter 2, but all the moves are amusing and easy to execute. You have a punch and kick button and the direction of the joystick determines what kinds of moves you perform (everything from leg sweeps to jump kicks). You can also jump really high and far by moving the joystick without pressing any buttons. People, like myself, who hate memorizing the complex moves in later fighting games should really enjoy this.

Graphics: 7/10 – The graphics are pretty simple, but amusing. Buchu, the first enemy, is particularly funny because he’s a big fat guy who likes to hurl his body at you. This is a pretty old game, so you won’t see anything fancy. Also, the male characters have really silly expressions on their faces when you kick them in the balls.

Music/Sound: 6/10 – The music isn’t anything worth playing on your stereo, but it’s kind of catchy. An energetic “Chinese” song plays over and over again. The sound effects are even more interesting because they remind me of kung fu movies.

Originality: 7/10 – Considering that this is one of the first fighters around, it’s a fairly original game for its time. I wouldn’t say that a fighter is original now, however, because I could fill the Grand Canyon with the amount of fighter titles out there.

Overall: 8/10 – I could name many fighters with better graphics, sound and controls, yet this game has kept me interested for years. It’s simple, but a lot of fun and features a variety of amusing enemies. Since you can probably play this game for free at any nickel arcade (or use MAME), I definitely recommend this title to anyone, which is why I give it such a high overall rating.
