Synopsis: # of Players: 1-2
Synopsis: I don’t know about you, but there are certain games of my childhood which stand out as landmarks for me, games that were so good that I’d practically soil myself while playing them for the first time. Altered Beast is one of them because it featured great graphics and a character who could transform into a variety of beasts.
Story: The god Zeus has risen you from the dead and has commanded you to rescue his daughter from an evil magician. You have the power to transform into five different animals by finding crystal balls.
Gameplay: 7/10 - I really love this game, but the controls aren’t the most responsive, especially before you transform into a beast. This adds to the challenge of the game, but sometimes it gets annoying. You can punch, kick and jump as a human, and perform different moves depending on what beast you transform into – werewolf, weredragon, werebear, weretiger, golden werewolf. There are only five stages, but this game can get pretty hard because of the sheer number of enemies coming after you.
Graphics: 10/10 – The graphics were great for its time and featured really creepy enemies, like those nasty blobs which attach themselves to your face when you get too close. Also, the transformation scene was awesome. The weredragon is my favorite character by far.
Music/Sound: 8/10 – The music was pretty interesting, but I liked the sound effects the most. I still remember Zeus’s commands: “Rise from your grave!” and “Never give up!” Also, the howling noise that occurs when you transform is great. The evil magician’s laugh is cool, too.
Originality: 10/10 – Other than Super Mario Bros., I don’t remember a game that had a character you could transform into different forms around this time. Also, I love the creepy fantasy/horror theme.
Overall: 9/10 – This is one of the greatest games of all time. I’d give it a perfect score, but I feel that the controls could have been better. Also, there are only five levels so I wished there were more. Compared to the other games that came out at the time, this one really stood out.
