Title: Breath of Fire
Author:Squaresoft
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Anonymous

Synopsis: What to say of Breath of Fire? If you like long, drawn out, and somewhat complex quests, this game is for you. The first in the "BoF" series is one that definately requires a serious time commitment to play. This is not necessarily a bad thing, mind you. It adds depth and character, if you will, to the game. Unfortunately, it also moves a bit too slowly for my personal tastes in video RPGs.

Anyway, the game starts you off with the hero, who is the standard semi-wimpy guy who sets out with just the sword, armor, and whatever you can get for the initial money. The first quest actually lets you find some pretty decent weapons and armor for the stage of the game.

I suppose it should be said that Breath of Fire is a game that is just as well used as a collectors' title as it is played. While the initial game is worth having a few sequals to, I would recommend that the casual RPG fan think twice at the very least before getting into this one, because interest will be lost all too quickly. The items and powerups are really great, but the game makes you work almost too hard for them. For instance, the hero's dragon morphs. A good many of them, especially the higher level ones, can kick some serious ass. The trouble is that one must find the shrines and beat down some overly challenging bosses with only the hero in the party.

The bottom line: unless you're a hard-core RPG player or a collector of SNES RPGs, think twice about this one.
