Synopsis: This game was so mindblowing when it came out in arcades. The Genesis port, while good, does no justice to the experience of playing Afterburner II in a dimly lit arcade room.
The best way to do this was if you were lucky enough to come across one of the cockpit style cabinets. You sat down and were surrounded by speakers on both sides and then there was the screen. The graphics were phenomenal for its time (and still pretty good by today's standards). This ate up so many of my quarters.
So how's the gameplay? Fastpaced, challenging, and fun as anything. If you aren't familiar with the Afterburner series, you take control of an aircraft that takes out ambushing airplanes and oncoming missle carriers. You use your unending machine gun fire to take out the planes as they come out at you from behind and you use your lock-on to fire missles at the carriers while dodging their own. This is all done at a 3rd person angle, and you control with an old-school joystick. Perfection.
As I said before, the graphics are topnotch for a game of its age, with bright colors and nice looking planes. It's as much fun to watch as it is to play.
The sound also fits the game as well. Digitized rock-sounding tunes play throughout the entire game and there are even warbled voice clips in the game to alert you of ambushing enemies.
Afterburner II owns. If you're lucky enough to find a cockpit-style cabinet of the game, consider it your mission to play it.
Best Cheats: If you need cheats to have fun in this game, you have issues.
