Title: General Chaos (2nd Review)
Author:Game Refuge
Rom Player: Gens
Reviewer: Mmmmm Toast

Synopsis: The Genesis had some truly standout games. General Chaos is one of them. It came in one of the ugly looking big cartridges with some yellow piece of plastic stuck in the side (I've seen those in a couple of cartridges, can someone explain them?), and it's not the best to look at, but that's just the cartridge.

The basis of General Chaos is basic; it's a strategic combat game. You have the option of having a 4-man army or a 2-man army. Your men consist of a machine gunner, a flamethrower, a guy with dynamite, and a guy with a grenade. More on that later.

The layout of the battles is simple. The playfield takes up the screen. The levels range from a jungle to a trainyard to an urban area. Your 4 troops are on one side and the enemy is on the other. Your mission: kill the enemy. This is done by selecting a troop and moving a cursor to where you need them to go and then you press the attack button and watch your troops do their thing. At times, 2 troops may break out into hand-to-hand combat and you'll have to take out the enemy by punching and kicking, Urban Champion style. When your troops fall, you can either call a medic or watch them die. There are also items scattered about the playfield to collect and double your score. Sometimes there will even be a special mission, such as destroy the train in the trainyard. One more thing; if you'd rather control your troops with the d-pad, you can choose to play with just 2 commandos and you switch on and off between them, but it's not going to be as easy.

So how is combat? It's easy enough to figure out. Your machine gunner can fire from long distances so you can keep him out of harm's way, same with the grenade chucker. The dynamite guy and the flamethrower are slightly riskier, as they're designed for close-range combat, but they deal more damage. Isn't that how life always is?

The graphics are top-notch for the genesis. Bright colors and well animated characters and great-looking landscapes will tempt you to run around the entire playfield (all interactive, of course).

Music is basically non-existent, except for the title, tutorial, and the briefing and victory/loser screen. The sound is your typical warbled voice crap but the weapons sound just fine.

Just like the game. If you can find a copy, give it a try. Chances are you'll have a blast, especially with 2 players.
