Synopsis: Holy Crap. Before the explosion of Spiderman games that have come out recently, this was THE Spiderman Game. I just have one thing to say before going any further....You can play as VENOM.
Yes, you heard that right. Venom is a playable character. You have to start out as Spiderman when you play, but once the story advances to a certain point, you get a choice between everyone's favorite wallcrawler, or his hulking counterpart (and all around cool guy) Venom.
I freakin' loved this game. And it's harder than your grampa after a full bottle of viagra. I only beat it once, and that was with extensive Game Genie cheats. But the gameplay is fun, there's so many moves to master, you won't mind as much.
The premise for the story follow the Maximum Carnage comic book series from Marvel pretty well. Of course, Carnage is a huge psychopath that excapes when his symboite gets the better of his captors, and he's free to kill. The rest of the Game is cameo after cameo of superheroes and villians to numerous to count. Venom helps because he feels guilty. After all, Carnage is a part of Venom, so the big guy thinks he should help out the webslinger, which is fine by me. You get to play as Venom, did I mention that?
Game Play: 7/10
It's hard as hell. I mean that you will never see past a certain level without cheating. But the controls are so much fun. You can pick peope up and toss them, kick them in the face, a jump kick, web swing kick. Before the PSone Spiderman, this actaully made you feel like you could do all the moves. The controls are really easy too, so there's hardly any learning time.
Graphics: 6/10
There's little details that needed to be put in, and some of the baddies are so generic it hurts. It's mostly cartoonish, which can be good and bad.
Music: 9/10
The soundtrack is by Green Jelly. 'nuff said. Remember the three little pigs song? How about Cereal Killer? The Cow God? I hope I'm not the only one who remembers Green Jelly.
Originality 5/10
It's your basic Final Fight set up. Beat the crap out of enemies till thier health bar depletes. And you got the generic enemies. A group of people that somewhat resemble Gambit of X-men Fame.
The wannabe Fred Durst's, the Fat dudes, and I fuckin' hate the Hair whip chicks.
Overall Rating: 9/10
The best superhero game of it's time. Once you got good, you felt like Spiderman throwing enemies around and tying them up.....until Doppleganger kicks the shit out of you.
Best Cheats: There's a few hidden places, One is in the Second level scaling up the building. On the first floor, jump into the window on the far right and you'll go to a littel room with 1ups. There's rooms like that all over the place.
