Title: Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman (2nd Review)

Synopsis: After forgetting about this game for god knows how many years, its not too surprising that I felt a surge of excitement when stumbling upon this gem for the first time in ten years or so. I truly believe that this is one of the better game boy games I ever played, and for many a reason.

Now, Im not too certain what exactly the plot to the game is, but here goes. I think Wario is trying to take over bomberland, and the bombermen have to stop him. You can choose who you want to be, either Wario (the bad guy, of course) or bomberman (the good guy). It is my opinion that this game was meant to be played in Wario's perspective, since if you choose bomberman, you will have to fight more then one Wario at once in rounds, and vice versa. That always confused me a little about the game. Did Wario fucking clone himself? I could understand a population of bombermen, but a Wario army? Well, its still a fun game anyway.

Here is how the game works. You have to use bombs to blow up your opponent (I really dont feel like saying bomberman/wario 6 million times, so Ill stick with guy) and blow up blocks to get upgrades like laying more bombs at once, a bigger blast, etc. There are blocks which are indestrucible (you can use em for protection), and basically you use your unlimited explosive collection to blow em to bits. The levels are divided into 3 parts, and each part is divided into three rounds, like best two out of three. Once you go the three rounds, you will then have to fight two guys at once, then three, and then the level boss. (I forgot to mention, after each and every round you have to recollect your upgrades, but the skills you will always keep) Thankfully you only have to beat the bosses once, because the later bosses can be a real pain in the ass without the proper strategy.

After conquering each level you learn a new skill, for example pushing bombs away. The levels also change as well. Warp holes appear, or you can hop over the blocks, etc. What kinda sucks about the game though is that gameplay wise, there's no real difference between Wario and Bomberman. They just seem to simmlar.

You character moves around the screen just like any old typical Zelda game in the overhead fashion. Gameplay is rather slow at first, for only your guy can walk a slow trot, but as you progess, you can learn the skill of dashing, which makes the game a little more fast paced. There isnt much to say about gameplay really. Like Burt Young commented on the 1976 hit flim Rocky "It is elegant in its simplicity." And thats no exception here. You run around, set bombs, blast your explosives so your enemies can bite the dust. I giving it a well deserved 8.

Graphics are well done as well. Although not as detailed as in Super Wario Land 3, Wario indeed looks like a fat, evil version of Mario. But the game itself looks smaller then in that game, so its forgivible. Its almost like looking overhead from a distance. Bomerman (or men, depending on who you choose to play as) looks like his part as well. As for the levels, they also look good, almost like you are watching a cartoon. Then again, this is nintendo, so that innocent child like apperence is to be expected.

I also liked the music in the game too. Each level has its own music, however the boss music always stayed the same, which is a bit of a let down. My favortive music in the game would probably have to be when you are in I think the plant/factory level, it sounds like, how to you put it, egh I think you will know what I'm talking about. When the bombs explode, it sounds pretty good, for a gameboy game. Your character also makes a walking/running sound when he moves as well as your characters, which is impressive as well.

Originality is kinda at a slump, however, cuz ideas like this have been used before, or at least elements of it. But its still a great game none of the less.

Overall, Wario Blast is a diamond in the ruff. If you havent played it yet, what are you waiting for? You wont regret it, I sure didnt!

Best Cheats: There are some passwords and such, but if you wait them you just have to lose the game. The passwords will be displayed on the continue screen.

Game Play: 8

Music/Sound: 8
