Synopsis: I think out of all those soda advertising campaigns, 7-Up had the best (yes, even better than the polar bears). Before they had Orlando Jones saying "up yours," they had a red dot thingy named Spot. And Spot had 'TUDE. Spot was rad. You could tell by the sunglasses and his laidback style. But yeah, the game.
Spot's friends are all kidnapped for unknown reasons so he must travel all over the world to free them, which involves killing countless crabs, bugs, and flying saucers. You'll guide Spot through levels such as a beach, a bath tub, a boat, and some random rooms, among others. Gain enough points and you can access the ultra rad bonus round where you collect points in a giant 7-Up bottles.
As you can tell, it was your typical platformer, just like the majority of the liscenced crap out there at the time. But somehow, Cool Spot wasn't crap (same goes with some of the others out there, such as Chester Cheetah). The graphics looked nice and Saturn-y (it came late in the Genesis' life), the controls were polished, and there were some catchy tunes as well.
Cool Spot stands out well as one of the few product placements that most of us will fondly remember. Never played it? Download the Genesis one for a good time, and on a related note, hunt down the Game Boy version of Spot, which is a Conquest-style game. Fun.
Just like games were meant to be.
