Title: Crystal Castles
Author:Atari(Now Part of Infrogrames)
Rom Player: Atari Anniversary Edition
Reviewer: Shane Skekel
Synopsis: GODDAMMIT! This site needs some more Arcade reviews! Now, I'm not talking about household names
such as Pac-Man and Asteroids. I'm talking about reviews to such obscure classics such as I, Robot(the very first polygon game), Spy Hunter(One of my
all-time favorite coin-op games), and countless others. Since too many people reviewing Zelda 2 and CV2: Simon's Quest; I have taken the liberty to
review one of Atari's lesser known gems, Crystal Castles. Of course, this game was a hit with gamers
back then, but it never got the amount of recognition that previous games such as Asteroids and Missile Command.
Game Play: This is a mix between Pac-Man(the main objective), Burger Time(the layers), Donkey Kong(the ability to jump and the power-ups), and Zaxxon(the Isometric view). Mixing these elements however, was a chore; but the men & women at Atari
got it right. Bentley the Bear(your character) controls well with the trackball, but it diminishes
slightly when you use the mouse or keyboard.
Graphics: Using 6809 technology, the graphics are good, but the character sprites are a bit garish(then again this game was made in 1983).
Music & Sound: It may seem annoying at first, but
it gets catchy once you get used to it.
Originality: It has some originality if you look carefully, but the aforementioned mix of game play elements prevents this from being a mainstream hit.
What I like about this game:
Perfect controls.
Plenty of Level variety.
Nice graphics at that time.
What I don't like about this game:
Sprites could use more detail, but this is excuseable since this was made in 1983.
Sounds are annoying at first.
Controls aren't as good on the Anniversary Edition version.
Not much in terms of originality.
Best Cheats:
Game Play: 9
Graphics: 7
Music/Sound: 8
Originality: 6
Overall Rating: 9
