Title: Metroid (4th Review)
Author:Nintendo
Rom Player: Nester

Synopsis: This is the game that began what would become one of Nintendo's top 3 franchises. This game not only invented nonlinearity, it defined and perfected it. This is the game that proved that women can be more heroic and bad ass than most men hope to ever be. For an early NES game, it had an amazingly in depth story at a time when most games barely had one. Basicly, your job is to stop Mother Brain from using the Metroid organisms as weapons of mass destruction. To do this, you had to explore a maze of tunnels and deliver some much needed brain damage to the brain. This game was the first game to feature a heroine, or woman hero to the English flunkies out there. This might not sound like a big deal now, but back then, it was unheard of. Unlike most games at the time, dying didn't always mean starting from the very beginning with almost nothing again. The dreaded passwords allowed gamers to keep track of how far they were in the game and to start with all the power-ups they got throughout the game. The password system is annoying, but having to start all over again while losing everything is even more annoying. Many people, including me, have tried to crack the password system, but most have failed. I haven't because quitting is for losers.
Graphics. Poor today, amazing yesterday. The graphics are amazing considering how old this game is. The lack of actual backround actually helps out with the mood and atmosphere. This isn't hugs and kisses baby land. Everything here wants you dead. The black backround makes you feel isolated and alone. The enemies have an amazing level of detail and variety compared to what other games had. The tileset is equally impressive. The NES was still new technology back then.
sound. The music is some of the, if not, the best music of the NES era. The title song is all out beautiful. The Brinstar theme is adventurous. The Norfair, Ridley's lair, and Kraid's lair songs are alot less heroic. The Tourian theme is eery. The countdown song really sounded alarming and constantly reminded you that, while the game is almost done, you should get your ass moving to keep it. The ending song really added to the sense of accomplishment. The sound effects are average at worst. Overall, the sound is great.
originality. You are sent to the planet Zebeth to exterminate a threat. You are alone. You are lost. You are weak. By the end of the game, you are both strong and vulnerable. You can kill almost every enemy, but you can just as easily be sent to the alien infested cave system in the sky. Your only way of keeping track of progress is a 24 character long password. You'll have to make your way to Mother Brain and deliver the much needed brain-damaging justice and to escape the planet before the area becomes a big white fireball.
Overall, it is truly a classic. It is both fustrating and rewarding. If you have enough skill, luck, and patience, you'll get the classic screw attack. This game put Metroid on the map, made women seem as heroic and bad ass as men, and is the first game based off of the alien movies to be actually good.

Best Cheats: Passwords: NARPAS SWORD0 000000 000000(NAR PASSWORD all power-ups and infinite health and missiles. Perfect for world records. ------ ------ JUSTIN BAILEY (just in bailey, whatever that means.) SUITLESS SAMUS! THE CLOSEST THING TO PORN ON THE NES!!! GAMEBO YADVEN CEISTH EBESTv (Gameboy Advence is the best)wierd. No morph ball. You don't have it. It's not where it is supposed to be. Cool, but impossible to beat the game with without gitches or cheating devices.
