Title: Secret of Mana (3rd Review)
Author:Squaresoft
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Anonymous

Synopsis: Usually, I don't write reviews for games that already have one here, but in the case of Secret of Mana, it's worth an exception. What's been said before about this game being great is true. The graphics were about as good as they got for a SNES game in 1993, and while the music did seem a bit silly sometimes, that was great too. It was nice to see that all of the characters could use all of the weapons, and grow as they used them.

As far as the story goes, it's a story about a hero of destiny who saves the world from evil. Even when SoM came out, there were a few games like it, but this one does it very well and deserves points for that.

And then we come to the game play. The game play was certainly challenging, but that's a good thing. I like games like this to be a challenge. In this case, however, the level of difficulty is also a rather major drawback. For example, there's the magic, which comes from various spirits, sprites, and other creatures of the planet. There's alot of good spells to be had, but they don't even begin to make appearances until well after they would come in handy.

The thing that really messes up the difficulty on this game is the artificial intelegence for the monsters seems a bit off sometimes. There are points in the game where it seems like you're going all out and nothing can stop you, and then you stumble into a "sweet spot," of sorts, where you wind up getting your ass handed to you by, for instance, a set of enchanted chairs. This wouldn't be so bad if there was a chance to get the character out a bad situation before it really gets bad.

All in all, though, Secret of Mana is a very good game, in spite of its wonky AI.
