Title: Friday the 13th (2nd Review)
Author:LJN Toys, and Paramount Pictures Corporation

Synopsis: After validating the original review of this game, I needed some pictures, so I downloaded it and gave it a run. Getting the pictures was easy, but after playing the game for a mere ten minutes, I knew there was a serious problem here, so I thought I’d crank out a review of my own. By now, everyone should know the story, as the movie series is already up to Friday the 13th part 12: Jason vs. The Blair Witch, but just in case your parents refused to let you see any R-rated movies as a kid, here’s a brief run-down: Some kid drowns in Crystal Lake and comes back to life as a fully-grown, hockey-masked slasher who sets about the effortless task of slaughtering teens while they’re having sex, and making weird noises in the woods. In the game, there are six camp counselors positioned in various small cabins throughout the camp. Each counselor comes equipped with a different running speed and jumping height, and an endless supply of rocks. These really come in handy, as they fly right over the heads of your enemies unless you crouch while throwing them. Other weapons, mainly knives that I’ve seen, appear randomly as you walk around outside and do much more damage than your crappy rocks.

It is not really made clear what the objective is, other than to light the fireplaces in the big cabins, which does not seem to do anything. Every other minute or so, Jason will attack either a camp counselor or the children, who are located in an isolated cabin that can only be reached by getting into a rowboat and paddling around the lake. One would think that the children should be put somewhere with protection incase they’re attacked or one of them wets their bed, but I guess that would throw off the streak of plot holes that the movie series has going. When you get to the cabin, or when you get to where he’s attacking another counselor, you’ll have to do battle with him briefly. This mainly consists of you dodging him as he makes awkward punches and then try to weaken him enough so that he disappears. Sometimes, you will be forced to do battle with him outside. This totally blows, as not only does he gain the ability to throw butcher knives at you, but also he’s aware that he can injure you simply by touching you.

Anyway, The game isn’t much different, except now, the camp is on an Indian burial ground; as you run around the camp, zombies will start popping up all over the place. As an added bonus, while rowing across the lake, blue waterlogged zombies will shoot straight up out of the water. In addition to the trails that go from cabin to cabin, there are two sets of forests and a cave. These are particularly annoying, as each path seems to place you in a random location in the forest/cave. I once went into the cave and took a nearby path elsewhere. I thought I’d go back and retrace my steps, but instead of winding up on the other side of the path, I wound up outside the cave again. I wonder how these damn teenagers got to be counselors when they have no sense of direction.

To add to the madness, the map says that there are two cabins in the forest. I found one and, after getting a key, went inside. Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Apparently, they exist only to lure you into the woods so that the wolves can kill you. Getting back to the enemies, as night comes, you’ll be greeted with red-eyed crows on the trails. The forests and cave, however, should simply be avoided, as both turn out powerful wolves and the cave becomes well stocked with bats (and not the cute, fruit-eating variety, either). The music consists of a five-note traveling tune that will drive you insane, as well as a song for exploring a house and on for battling Jason. The sound effects are the usual bizarre and spastic blend used for Nintendo games, plus a loud “swoosh” whenever you find Jason or a counselor or group of children dies.

Overall, this is not the most impressive game. Still, if you fancy a game where you must overcome ridiculous odds and zombies with huge hair, this one’s for you.
