Synopsis: The Game Boy was intended as a way to get a video game fix when you couldn't reach a console. The games generally reflected this; most of them were but pale shadows of their console equivalents. There were exceptions, though, and among the more unappreciated ones is Gradius 2. As you'd expect, it has all the elements that make the series instantly recognizable -- the unique powerup system, the option ghost ships, etc. But surprisingly, it turns out to be a masterpiece of minimalist storytelling. No words are shown on screen, no humanoid characters are displayed, but you feel as if you've been drawn into an epic sci-fi adventure. Rather than having a string of random, unconnected levels arbitrarily thrown together, the story logical progresses from one level to the next, tied together with innovative cutscenes. The music is reminiscent of the original NES game, but is even catchier, and sets the mood perfectly. The entire game is paying homage to its classic ancestry, and the volcano core ship is just perfect. The scenery, in addition, is the most beautiful i've ever seen on the Game Boy. Ok, I'll stop gushing now.
