Title: Secret of Evermore
Author:Squaresoft
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Tawna Evans

Synopsis: A scientific experiment turns out bad after four people wind up trapped in their own separate fantasy worlds, the conglomeration of them being known as Evermore. Twenty years later, a boy and his dog stumble across a strange machine in an old mansion that transports them to a fantastic new world. After meeting the professor's butler, the boy embarks on a journey into the different worlds created through the professor's experiment, while searching for a way to return home.

This game borrows many game-play elements from the Secret of Mana. It uses a circular, rotating menu that includes the same icons as those in the Secret of Mana. In addition, skills using magic and weapons increase with their use, which is something that is implemented in the Secret of Mana. In this game, the boy attacks using weapons and magic, while the dog bites opponents and sniffs out the alchemy ingredients that the boy uses with magic spells. This team element has been used before in older games, such as "A Boy and His Blob" and "8 Eyes." There's nothing new, here. Perhaps the only unique aspect of the game would be its plot, but all other aspects of the game leave nothing new to experience. To top this off, the game contains a nasty bug that you might encounter while trying to acquire parts for a rocket. If you do not do everything perfectly correct when trying to acquire the power source from Tiny, you'll get stuck, with no means of rectifying the problem... other than starting the game all over from the beginning! The mazes in this game can confuse the player so much, that making maps can seem mandatory. In spite of that, the graphics and music in this game are pretty nice. The worlds range from lush jungles with the sounds of birds calling and raptors growling, to a lively market with crowds of people yapping and chickens and goats for sale joining the raucous. The graphics combined with the realistic sounds make it seem as though you are in the game. However, one aspect I can't stand is the intro song... it is so loud and annoying that it drives me nuts! The ending of this game is okay, but it sort of leaves me wondering what's going to happen later. An Evermore sequel coming out might've been nice, but that never happened. I sort of wonder how the four people who were trapped in Evermore for twenty years coped with society afterwards. Will they feel out of place? Probably.
