Title: Top Gun
Author:Nothing Entered
Rom Player: NESticle

Synopsis: Whenever there is a hit movie, someone automatically thinks, "Hey, this should be a video game." Unfortunately, that leads to games like Home Alone and ET. Granted, there are some descent games on movies, the insanely difficult Star Wars games come to mind, but at least they follow the movie somewhat. The only similarities between the game, Top Gun, and the movie, Top Gun, are the logo and the fact you fly a plane. There's no Goose or Iceman to help you get through the tough times. There is no semi-hot 80's flight instructor chick to try to bang. There is no penis-headed guy to tell you that you are a shitty hotshot pilot. So why the hell would you want to play a game that is missing all of that from the movie?
The reason is simple, you get to destroy planes with guns and missiles. You get a selection of 3 different types of missiles: hounds, foxes, or tigers. The major difference between the 3 is that you get more of the weaker ones (hounds), but they do less damage. Through countless hours of playing this game, I don't think I ever took the Tiger. I need to destroy the damn commies or whoever is attacking me, and 10 missiles ain't enough to do it. Throughout the game, you get attacked by about 5000 planes, a navy roughly the size of the US, about 300 various land vehicles, and many other targets that I couldn't identify. The bosses in this game are some of the stupidest ideas for bosses I have seen. The main guy is a space shuttle that you have to blow up before it takes off the ground. I know, a space shuttle doesn't seem too hard, but when it is guard by 300 planes and about 600 missiles, it can get harder, especially if you are like me and always have no missiles left because you fire at everything moving.
Overall, the game is very solid. You have to land and refuel the plane, which takes time to master (it only took about 10 years to get the landing part down, now I'm working on the refueling). The graphics are neither special, nor bad. The songs are touching, power ballad-ish patriotic anthems. The gameplay is standard NES monotony. If you haven't ever played this game, I would give it a shot. It is the second best flying game I have played (it's no damn Ace Combat game). Now, if they would only make a game based on Hot Shots...
Best Cheats: [Nintendo powermode on] Carefully for enemy missiles. You must try to dodge them. Hint: You can also shoot them with your machine gun. [Nintendo Power mode off]
