Title: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Author:ULTRA games
Rom Player: FCEUltra or Nesticle
Reviewer: Chojin
Synopsis: It's always nice when a game that's based off of something is actually good. The game operates like Legend of Zelda 2 - you go from stage to stage (or sewer to sewer) in non-linear fashion on a larger map, whalloping every foot clan member, mouser, and ill-tempered sewer bat that is inexplicably barring your way. Later, you'll find that April O'Neil has been kidnapped, which leads you to wonder exactly why you were throttling the unsuspecting underground populace up to this point. No one can say, since the game doesn't exactly have an intro, much less an explanation for most of the events that occur during the course of your adventure. But none of that really matters, because this is an action/adventure title and plot is just background to the beatings.
What sets this game apart from other adventure games (other than the TMNT license) is a focus is strategic play - you can pause the game at any time and switch turtles, each of whom have different methods of attack, and more importantly, different life bars. While this twist to the genre is definately interesting and fun for matured gamers, the game's lack of popularity is testament to the fact that it alienated its target audience with its complexity. In addition, its extreme difficulty and lack of continues makes this a challenge for even the best of cheaters.
As for technicalities, the graphics are very good for the limitations of the console, and some of the tunes on the soundtrack are the most expertly-designed scores on the system. Overall, it's a very sound title once you get used to its system and learn to ignore the many holes in the plot (which shouldn't be too difficult a task for those of you that watched the show).
