Title: TMNT III: The Manhattan Project
Author:Konami
Rom Player: NESticle
Reviewer: Alias1

Synopsis: The story is as follows: Our heroes are maxin' and relaxin' on a beach in Florida when their vacation is cut short by the news that Shredder, along with Krang, has stolen Manhattan. Bummer, I know. So the turtles must battle through various henchmen on their way to saving Manhattan (and April O'Neil - naturally).

Speaking of which, the bad guys: You'll fight Rocksteady, Groundchuck, Bebop, Dirtbag, Leatherhead, Rahzar, Shredder, Tokka, Krang, and Super Shredder. A lot, yes, but with just enough variety to keep things from getting repetitive. It's still your standard side-scrolling combat game, but you will have to adapt your moves to deal with certain enemies.

The levels: The first stage takes you to beach, from there, it's surfing, a battleship, a bridge, the streets of New York, a subway station, a sewer, the Technodrome, an elevator, the top of a skyscraper, and Krang's spaceship.

The sounds: Will it make you want to shave off your nipples with a cheese grater? That depends. In my mind Mega Man 2 stands as one of the catchiest game soundtracks ever. TMNTIII is serviceable enough, with it's poppy upbeat tunes and "arcadey" sound effects.

Game Play: Is it fun? Hell yes. Fans of Double Dragon will love this. It's not too difficult, but I guess it would be considered long, especially for a NES game. One of the best things about TNMTIII is the option to switch characters at the beginning of the game, between each level, and after your character dies. While each turtle is unique they can all execute the same moves (even that pussy Donatello). They are: the Jab & Toss, the Flying Flip Kick and the Flying Ninja Kick. There are also four special attack moves, one for each turtle: Donatello’s Knockout Roll, Leonardo’s Cyclone Sword Spin, Michaelangelo’s Kangaroo Kick and Raphael’s Power Drill Attack.

Personal Feelings: I loved the Ninja Turtles. Loved. Them. They were everywhere when I was younger. Michaelangelo was my favorite (he had nunchucks. Nunchunks, people!), but I had a crush on Leonardo (he had the cooler name, and he wore blue). What? I'm sure I'm not the only one. Anyway, nostalgia can often blind someone to the awesome craposity of a game. But this game brings it. Konami put out a string of solid TMNT games for the NES. This one just might be the best.

Best Cheats: Cheat Mode: Press Up twice, Down twice, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Start at the title screen before the demo begins. When in two player mode press Up twice, Down twice, Left, Right, Left, Right, A, B, Select, Start. Level select, extra lives, and sound test options will now be available.

Random Turtle Selection:
Press Down five times at the character selection screen (10 times if you're in two player mode). After a turtle is defeated, the next turtle will automatically be selected randomly.
