Title: Splatterhouse 2 (2nd Review)
Author:Namco
Rom Player: Gens
Reviewer: Zomboid
Synopsis: As a kid (well… when I was younger) I rented a game for my genesis almost every weekend and the ones I loved the most were the ones packed with gore and horror themes. This is easily one of the goriest games of all time. The story was cool when I first played it and is a little cheesier now, but it's still all right. All sorts of gruesome monsters in the original took your girlfriend, and this one takes place 3 months later. You go back to the house to rescue her...kinda boring, and it helps if you've played the first, but not bad. Now, onto the review!
The only bad thing that I can think of about this game is the way you move. Rick is a slow-reacting and moving jackass in this game and has a short life bar.
The detail for the backgrounds is really good. There's guts smeared all over the walls and blood all over the ground. There are some really cool things that happen to monsters too, like the one that walks right into a pit of creepy worm type monsters. As the game goes on, the monsters look cooler as do the levels.
The enemies get harder each level and some are very annoying. The ones you fight in the elevator can be a real pain in the ass cause you can't always see where they're gonna land. Fortunately, you get some weapons to deal with the bastards. The weapons are pretty cool and you get a decent amount throughout the game. I haven't played through the whole thing in about a year but I remember a lot of different ways for them to die to go with each weapon, the coolest being the pipe, which splatters them right against the wall.
The bosses are also pretty cool and are some of the grossest things in the game, like the first one, who's belly blows when you kill him (if you like that, just wait till you get to fight the big blue head and see what happens right before he dies… think of zits).
Graphics:9 Pretty good for Sega and I always include stuff like background when rating graphics, and the background is really cool.
Sound: 8 I really like the music in the two Splatterhouse games for genesis and the sound effects are pretty cool. Watch the big intro thing with the woods and hanging bodies for a cool (in my opinion) theme.
Gameplay:7 This is where the game is weak. You go forward and backward and you have this crappy little jump. The next game in the series is really cool cause you move all over the screen and can do more moves.
Originality: 4 Not very original...first, it's a beat ‘em up, which is a very common type of game. Second, it's got a game that came before it, so the only sort of original thing about it (the gore) isn't all that original.
Overall:8 It falls a bit short due to the gameplay problem and the gore almost makes up for it, but it could have been a lot better, and Splatterhouse 3 is proof of that.
***Note for the person that reviews this*** I didn't realize how similar this was to Dr. Boogie's review till after I wrote it and read his to compare. So if you don't think it should be approved, I understand.
