Title: Xenophobe
Author:Bally/Midway, 1987

Synopsis: # of players: 1-4
Synopsis: This is a remake of the 1987 arcade classic. The story is set sometime in the future where an alien race known as the Xenos have taken over 23 space stations. It's up to you and your group of friends to eliminate all the Xenos and keep them from taking over Earth.
Gameplay: 9/10 - The game is pretty simple. There are six main types of Xenos. Eggs are easy kills because they just sit there. Tentacles come up from the ground or ceiling to grab you. They're also easy to kill. Critters, another easy kill, resemble hermit crabs. They latch onto you and you have to shake them off. Rollerbabies turn into indestructible balls and roll into you. Snotterpillars leap at you and spit green goo. They're the toughest Xeno to kill. Festors can also be difficult because they hide in the doorways and hypnotize you when you get too close. They also throw balls at you that turn into eggs. If you survive, you will also end up fighting a Queen Xeno, but I won't mention anything more about her.
In a one-player game you can select up to four humanoid characters out of nine. In multiplayer, you can keep selecting characters until all nine are killed. For added fun, one person can play a Snotterpillar to destroy the others.
There are all kinds of items you can find in the game. Some like vitamins replenish health, while others just give you points. You can also find better guns and grenades to make your job easier. Occasionally you can operate certain types of equipment if you have the proper items.
You can complete a level in three ways: The best way to win is to kill all the Xenos because it gives you the most points. The second way is to set off the space station's self-destruct mechanism. The third way happens when the Xenos overrun the base. You don't get points for this. This game isn't too difficult, though, so I've always been able to kill all the Xenos.
Graphics: 7/10 - The graphics aren't bad for the Lynx. All the characters are cartoony like the arcade version. It's a great translation.
Music/Sound: 5/10 - The music is pretty boring. You hear the Xenophobe theme song at the beginning and in-between levels, and then a drum-like rhythm throughout each level. The sound effects are okay because it's fun to hear the Xenos roar in pain when you shoot them. Originality: 6/10 - It's basically a cutesy version of the movie Aliens. Still, it's neat to interact with the gaming environment. Overall 7/10 - I've owned a Lynx for years and this is still one of my favorite games to play. Even though I've beaten the game several times, it's still fun to plow through tons of Xenos every now and then. I've noticed that this cartridge isn't that easy to find anymore, so you might have to pay a higher price to get it. Tips: 1. Pay attention to the in-game hints in order to kill the Queen Xeno at the end. 2. If you reduce the number of Xenos to less than 10%, they often die on their own. 3. Get the orange security card and use it at the security terminal to get the spherical robot to fight for you. Otherwise it shoots you instead. 4. Use the yellow key to open the Xeno containment unit and kill a bunch of Snotterpillars for more points. 5. You can move more than one gun into different rooms by picking it up and dropping it as you crawl into the next room. This is VERY useful on the levels that require a fire extinguisher because you'll need to have a stronger weapon around to fight the Xenos.
