Synopsis: # of Players: 1-2
Synopsis: I used to play this awesome strategy game with my brother and aunt whenever we went to the arcade. This faithful translation allows you to pick a castle and defend it with cannons against enemy ships, ground forces or other players.
Gameplay: 7/10 - Pretty much anyone can learn to play this game, but it's difficult to beat the last level. You start by choosing your home castle. The game then consists of two rounds. In the "attack" round, you move the crosshairs and fire at enemy ships or an opponent. If enemies remain, you proceed to the "rebuild" round, where you must completely enclose your castle with tetris-like shapes that you can shift around. You can also enclose surrounding castles for more territory points and extra cannons. However, you MUST have at least one castle enclosed or you lose the game. In the early rounds, you don't have to destroy all the enemy ships. In later rounds, you must destroy the ships before they come close to land. Otherwise, they release ground troops that slowly move toward your castle to burn it. They're very difficult to hit. Walls will keep them out, but you cannot place a wall on land occupied by troops. Also, you are allowed only a certain number of rounds to defeat the enemy. You lose the game if enemies remain after the final round.
I would give the gameplay a higher rating except that it's harder to play with a directional pad. The arcade version had a trackball, which made things easier.
Graphics: 8/10 - The graphics look just like the arcade version, which means they're rather simplistic. However, there are some cool still pictures in-between levels and the scaling on the cannon balls is excellent.
Music/Sound: 9/10 - Everything from the arcade version can be found here. There isn't much music in the game, but the sounds are incredible. The announcer sounds great when he says "Ready! Aim! Fire!" in his English accent.
Originality: 10/10 - I don't think there's anything like this game around, which is why it's such a classic.
Overall: 9/10 - I definitely recommend getting this game for the Lynx. You'll spend hours trying to master it and even when you do it's great to try and make the biggest castle possible. If you want even more variety, I suggest getting the SNES version because it has tons of new features not found in this version (or the arcade version).
Best Cheats: Tips: 1. Since the ships move and it takes time for the cannon balls to hit, you should aim just ahead of where a ship is going.
2. Try to hold onto your home castle. You get more cannons each round with a home castle than you do with another castle.
3. If you're fast, you can sometimes fence in the ground troups with walls (completely) to destroy them all.
