Synopsis: This game suffers the same afflictions as the movie. Mainly, the biggest plothole since Bowser pulled himself up out of the magma. For the fifteenth time.
The entire point behind Alien 3 (If you can honestly say the movie had a point.) was that Ripley and the prisoners of Fiorina 161 (Fury) had no weapons, no chance of rescue, and only one Alien to deal with.
Somehow in the transition to video game, the geniuses at Acclaim decided that "We have NO weapons?!" translates into "We have a pulse rifle/flame unit combo." They also decided "One Alien?" translated into "An unlimited number of Drones, Eggs, Facehuggers, and a Queen." Which makes no sense either because in the movie, the Queen was still waiting to 'burst Ripley.
This game is actually very good if you remember that, despite the name, it is in no way connected with any of the twelve different versions of the Alien 3 script. As a standalone game however, it is greatness. The graphics are very smooth and well done for a SNES game. Ripley moves like a person, and the various Alien incarnations look freaky. The sound and music only add to the frightening atmosphere of the game. The game play and originality are rated low because, despite the graphics and spookiness, it's still just an action/adventure sidescroller.
All in all, this game is perhaps the best sidescroller on the SNES, beaten back only by Super Metroid.
If you want to try it, I suggest getting the ROM before you spend money on the cart, though. (Sorry, had to be said. Play it until you get sick of it in my opinion. Morons shouldn't have made the game so hard to find.)
