Title: Star Tropics
Author:Nintendo
Rom Player: NESticle
Reviewer: James Light

Synopsis: You take on the role of Mike; a young boy who goes to visit his uncle on an Island called C-Island. Once he arrives, he learns that his uncle has disappeared, and sets off on an adventure to find him.

The game is laid out like a mix between Legend of Zelda I and II. Most of the game takes place on an overhead map that you wander about, going around to villages and dungeons, and other various spots. The gameplay for this is very simple. Walking around, talking to people, and trying to make your way to the next spot. There are no enemies on the map, or in villages, so you don't have to worry about that.

But when you get into a dungeon-like area, the layout changes. The view is similar to Legend of Zelda I, but there are some more puzzle-solving elements than in LoZ. Getting further in dungeons requires things like killing all the enemies in a room, activating items you picked up, jumping on green tiles to activate buttons to press, and more. While it does sound similar to Zelda, they are more abundant in Star Tropics.

One major problem through with the gameplay, is the control. In the dungeons, moving around becomes rather stiff, and most of the fighting revolves around dodging and attacking. Such a combination can be frustrating. But other than that, the gameplay is fairly decent, and very familiar to any Zelda veteran.

The graphics are rather standard for the NES, and makes the best with what they had. That's really all I can say on this.

However, the music is not standard. The sounds and music in the game vary from Zelda-esque tones, to really stale noises similar to Duck Hunt. It's not very pleasing at all. Most of the times, I have to play with the sound off.

Originality is where this game falls flat on its face. As I previously said, this game was made in Legend of Zelda's image. Expect instead of Link with a sword, you're Mike with a Yo-Yo. And instead of rescuing a princess, you're rescuing your uncle. Even the user files and life meters are taken almost directly from Zelda. The best way to describe this game is by calling it, "Legend of Zelda, with an island mask."

Overall, this game is good for die-hard Zelda fans, as you can basically call it a spin-off. But there's clearly a reason why you haven't seen a Star Tropics game since the NES days. If you were looking for a great adventure game, I'd play Zelda instead.
