Title: Transformers: Mystery Of Convoy
Author:Takara
Rom Player: JNES

Synopsis: Transformers: Mystery Of Convoy is one of those games that are based on a popular series or movie and usually fail with flying colors. For this game, there's no exception. It will be explained as you would read further.
Gameplay: You play Ultra Magnus (considered one of the least favored character in the TF series), who goes out to fight the Destrons/Decepticons without really much of the story explained in the game. It's basically a side-scrolling shooter, only that you can fight and use different weapons in different modes (Vehicle with Vertical attacks and decreasing range missiles & Horizontal projectiles in robot mode). You have to go through stages, killing whatever gets in your path, and avoid dying. It's almost impossible not to die since one hit or touch from an enemy instantly kills you. In other words, get ready for a really difficult game.
Graphics: Very, very primitive, even for its time. Some of the graphics are good, like Ultra Magnus's sprite, as you can easily distinguish him if you've watched the show/movie and/or own the action figure (Like I have). However, other characters are not easily distinguished unless, of course, you know all the characters by heart, and know each alternate form. Even still, they are hard to distinguish, like the jet in stage 1. It looks like Starscream, with the design and colors, but it could also be one of the other seekers like Thundercracker or Dirge.
Music: The music is not great at all, and not really familiar, except for two tunes: one being the title screen where the 8-bit music you hear is the Japanese intro of the 3rd season of the American Transformers cartoon, "Dash Transformers". The actual song itself is pretty good, but the 8-bit conversion doesn't quite agree with your ears. The second recognizable tune is the screen where it displays how many lives are left. It is the scene changing tune (in the cartoon, when the faction symbols are displayed and sometimes change from Decepticon to Autobot, Autobot to Decepticon, or just the same symbols flipped.) Once again, not a very good conversion of the tune.
Originality: Well, you have a character who can shoot at enemies and transform, but you can still die in one hit just like many other NES side-scrollers like Super Mario Bros. (Initially w/o the powerups) A side-scroller game is not the most original, and I feel that any type of Transformer game that would be made could at least have different gameplay like Strategy or RPG.
Overall: Despite my deep fondness of the Transformer series, I do not think this game does the Transformer title justice. Avoid this game unless you're looking for a challenge and/or ready to lose. Once again, this game should have had more thought and effort put into it.
