Title: Axelay
Author:Konami
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Keith Hadayia
Synopsis: Easily one of the best console shooters of all time; Axelay featured both overhead and side-scrolling levels, with a cycle-through style weapons selection (a la Contra III). Especially considering this was a first generation SNES game from 1992, some of the best visuals ever in the history of the console, especially in this genre. The overall game provided a fair challenge, but the real shortfall lies in the fact that the game only has 6 levels, with the last being way harder than the others combined. The music and sound effects are also solid, with a few catchy beats for some of the levels, the “arms installation is complete; good luck" sounding remarkably clear for a game this age. The explosions sound really good on a stereo rig of some kind. There's even a bonus cameo in the game by none other than ED-209 from the Robocop game/movie. There are some issues with slowdown, when the screen gets really crowded, especially if your weapon of choice is the needle cracker (that's really the name). This weapon spreads out little blue lasers, which will slow the game down. Fans of treasure take heart! This was one of Masato Maegawa's last projects with Konami on the super NES (Contra Hard Corps on Genesis was the last), so fans of Gunstar Heroes and Dynamite Headdy will recognize the trademark "treasure quality in this title" In summary, all you e-bay snipers out there this one's really hard to find and consider yourself a master of bidding if you score this class A booty!!
