Title: S.T.U.N. Runner
Author:Atari Games

Synopsis: When I was about 11 years old, my mother was going through a country line-dancing phase. She would complain that nobody would go with her and usually ended up dragging me along. It was hell. Loud country music, drunken rednecks, hay bails and the stink of monkeys everywhere. (The place also served as an exotic animal rescue/zoo thingy). But in the back of this living heehaw episode was a gaming area with really old arcade games and air hockey machines.
This is where I discovered S.T.U.N. Runner and managed to salvage my sanity.
I must've spent hundreds of dollars in quarters playing nothing but S.T.U.N. Runner. The machine had a motorcycle-like seat with a handlebar equipped with trigger buttons and wrist twisty acceleration controls. Even with the dated polygon graphics it made me feel like I was in the game.
If you've ever played Wipeout then you have S.T.U.N. Runner to thank. This is the grandfather of Wipeout and plays in a fairly similar fashion. You speed along in some sort of futuristic hoverbike/car thingy, shooting other vehicles, nabbing power-ups and trying to beat the clock. Sound familiar? There are even speed boosting tiles on the track to get you to the finish faster.
It's not entirely Wipeout though. You're not racing against any opponents. There's no first or second place. You're only going for a top time. Not that it's an easy task. You have to reach the goal before you very limited time runs out. It can be very difficult to even finish a track, let alone get a high scoring time.
While it was great in its original form, it kinda sucks in its emulated version. Especially if you use keyboard controls. The typical arrow key controls are slow and sometimes totally unresponsive. You'll need a steering wheel controller to accurately maneuver your vehicle.
Overall it's a great classic and Wipeout fans should definitely check it out. See where it all began.
