Synopsis: Background: Monopoly, the Real Estate board game that (almost) everyone loves. There have been many video game ports of Monopoly, and the NES is no exception. Despite the rules of the board game are essentially the same in the video game ports, there are noticeable differences in each port.
Gameplay: The rules of the game are basically the same as the board game, only that you can't bend or break the rules to give a player an "edge". You basically choose a token (game piece), roll dice to land on property, take control of it, and spend money to gain money (through rent from other players). There's a game setup (before starting the board game) that allows you to modify a player's starting money, property, and preset arrangements to randomly assign properties to players and set up the starting cash for each player. What I like about video game ports of Monopoly is that you don't have to waste time setting up the cash for each player. The CPU controlled players can be unreasonable. No matter how much money you can offer for even a single property (Even if you offer $99,999), the CPU will decline the offer, no questions asked. The only way you can trade with the CPU is offering (even the most insignificant) property. I prefer playing this game with another human player, but for anyone wanting a challenge, this game's for you.
Graphics: Admittedly, they're not the best graphics compared to other games, but it does have a simplicity that makes the game fairly detailed and easy to understand what's going on. There is interesting animation, like the token movement and the cash register and White House eating up your cash.
Music: Pretty average. The title music is okay, but nothing that can appeal to your emotions. Whenever a player lands on a property that is owned by someone else or on any government money collection space (like Luxury & Income Tax), surprisingly freaky music plays. Since you'll be hearing these tunes FREQUENTLY, it can and will be annoying.
Originality: This is Monopoly, the original board game created by Charles Darrow (Some others would disagree that he invented the Rent & Collect board game concept). Nothing much to mention here except that this is a video game port of the board game.
Overall: This game gets an average rating of 7 out of 10, which means this game is exceptionally playable. It's not for everybody, and it's usually recommended to play the board game instead. However, I like this port of Monopoly better than the SNES version.
