Synopsis: I have learned most of what i know about hockey from the Electronic Arts title, NHL 96. I now know that 90% of all shots made from the blue line will in fact result in a goal scored. I know that somehow, if the Chicago Blackhawks dared, could hire my friends and I as players and we could go undefeated all season long. And I now also believe that if I met Wayne Gretzky and attempted to fight him, I would prove to be the victor. Not that I am tough by any means, but he's only got, like, two moves in his arsenal.
Don’t believe me? Break it out then, only shoot from the aforementioned blue line, create a team with anyone you desire, and pick a fight with the great one. Tell me I’m wrong now.
Bitter? Maybe. I've only recently played it because my ps2 went down and I was eager to play anything. That being said: a fair to decent game actually. You can make the game fun by refusing to shoot from the blue line, and scoring can be trickier if you do so, which is nice.
I do like a create-a-player feature, if not only for creating them and placing them on another team to see how they would fair in the computers control over a season (or to fight them if you were so lucky to face him/her).
Which brings us to fighting: fighting is good. It does not happen nearly enough. When it does, it doesn’t last nearly as long as it should. Granted, its not Tekken or Mortal Kombat due to the graphics being as small as they are. . . think of it as Tekken, only very, very far away.
The music: you'll really like the intro music if you really like crappy techno. At one time, I knew the name of this song, as I'm pretty sure it was on a Jock Jams CD. Oh my. Jock Jams. I think I just threw up in my mouth. The menu music is equally annoying and I wish it would go away. In-game sounds are fine, no trouble there.
So is it playable? Yes it is. The occasional fight is worth it, I guess, especially if you're playing against someone. So I say: don’t be afraid of the NHL '96.
And my apologies to Mr. Gretzky. But I still think I can take you.
