Title: Rescue – The Embassy Mission

Synopsis: I have never seen a game for the NES like this one. In Rescue, you control a “band of commandos” that has to rescue the hostages after negotiations with the terrorists who have taken over the embassy fail. The game is unique, in that it involves Rainbow 6 style tactics, but it could have been so much better. The sniper placement phase only requires you to get one sniper in place. The other two are basically just cannon fodder. The phase itself is tricky because the view shifts only after you get to a certain point, meaning that you could be doing well, then the view shifts and you see a searchlight racing over to nail you sniper. After that, you get to snipe some terrorists before sending your second squad of commandos in, after they were airdropped on the roof. The enemies in sniping mode look more like the cutouts you see at a target range, and move with that same stiffness. Missing them doesn’t have any consequences, as you have unlimited ammo and they don’t seem to notice that a window just broke. Next, you infiltrate the building by having one commando rappel down to a window. What follows is a reasonably well-done first person shooting section, as you proceed through the three floors of the embassy. Unfortunately, that’s it; after you do all that, the game is over. There are difficulty settings that increase the speed and number of searchlights in the sniper placement phase and terrorists in the infiltration phase, and another group of settings that decide how much time you have to do all this (from eighteen to ten minutes). The sound is pretty good, with music that sets the scene. In the sniper placement phase, the music even becomes quieter when you’re hiding in a doorway or behind an obstacle. The effects are pretty bland, though. Overall, this game is reasonably fun to play, but is not one of my all-time favorites.
