Synopsis: I bought this Colecovision game in 1999. Popeye has three screens. The arcade version was made by Nintendo. This version was made by Parker Bros. On the first screen, you must catch 24 hearts that Olive throws at you. The hearts fall down the screen. If they reach the lake at the very bottom and stay there too long, they'll crack and you'll lose a life.
On the second screen, you must catch 16 music notes that Olive throws. Like the hearts, if they reach and stay in the lake for too long, they'll crack.
On the third screen, Olive throws the letters H-E-L-P at you six times. Like the hearts and music notes, if the letters reach and stay in the lake for too long, they'll crack. On the third screen you must also battle the Seahag's vulture. You must punch him. If he touches you, you're dead. When you eat your spinach, you'll kill the vulture just by touching him.
Watch out for Brutus. If he's on the platform above you, he can reach down and hit you or jump and pounce on you. If he's on the platform below you, he can jump and hit you. When you and Brutus are on the same platform, he will throw bottles at you. The Seahag appears at the side of the screen from time to time and throws bottles at you as well.
You can grab your spinach and temporarily whoop Brutus. Punching Brutus earns you 3000 points. On the first screen you can also knock a barrel on Brutus's head and render him harmless for several seconds.
This game is good. It's better than the Atari 2600 version but not as good as the Atari 5200 version. On the Colecovision Popeye, the music from the first screen is played on all three screens and when Popeye eats spinach, he turns green. On the Atari 5200 Popeye, each screen has different music and Popeye turns red when he eats spinach just like the arcade.
The Colecovision Popeye is fun but if you have the Atari 5200, buy Popeye for it. You can find this and other games on Ebay.
I give the Colecovision Popeye a 4.
