Title: Star Ocean
Author:Enix & Tri-Ace
Rom Player: ZSNES
Reviewer: Shane Skekel

Synopsis: Of all the RPGs reviewed on this website, there isn't one for this Super NES masterpiece with the crappy PS sequel (note: I never recognize the Playstation as PSX, I recognize it as PS). This time, Enix had published the best damn RPG Tri-Ace has ever made, and it's a damn shame that they never released it here. It could have been so popular to where not even the PS Final Fantasy games could even match. Now onto the review:

Game Play: The game play is very fun, or should I say addictive. This game used a completely new battle system called Full Motion, which lets your character move around on the playing field. There are multiple characters in the game and therefore, multiple endings. I will not tell you how many characters there are or endings because you must play the game to find out. However, I will tell you the button setup (while fighting): A button=attack, B button=cancel attack, Y button=magic or super attack, X=use item, L & R= Switch through characters. Another innovation that this game has is an item creation system that can be complicated, but it can get you the really good shit in the game. The downs with this aspect are that it is a bit on the buggy side and no scan technique.

Graphics: The graphics in this game use SDD1 graphics compression and therefore, look great even though they can't hold a candle to DKC 1-3, Killer Instinct 1 & 2, or Yoshi's Story (N64). However, it is near impossible to get the graphics working on an emulator such as ZSNES. Therefore, the graphics get a ten for using SDD1.

Music and Sound: This game also uses a special sound chip in order to render the kickass sound effects such as crickets chirping in a forest. This game, as with Tales of Phantasia, Earthworm Jim 1 & 2, Killer Instinct 1 & 2, any Ren & Stimpy game, any Simpsons game (Genesis and later), and many other Super NES games, has voice acting and spectacular voice acting at that. The music I'm not going into detail because you have to listen to it yourself.

Originality: This game screams originality, especially when compared to all those PS RPGs, which consist of sequels to older games such as Tales of Destiny, Original ideas that turn out to be rip-offs of various animes such as Xenogears, and spin-offs of other non-RPG franchises.

Overall, Star Ocean is worth buying despite its flaws because downloading a 6 megabyte ROM is just not enough. Plus, you have to download a graphics pack in order to get the graphics to work. However, that doesn't take away the fun factor and replay value of this kick ass game.
