Synopsis: The Turrican assault suit is back. As peace returns to the universe, a group of evil robots and mutants, led by a man with a cape and a funny helmet, called The Machine has come back to blow things up and take people as slaves. Bren McGuire (Hey, I don’t pick the names), leader of the Turrican assault force, decides to go postal on The Machine because he’s weirdly drawn, and he sees a weirdly drawn girl kidnapped by The Machine. Funny helmets must be the rage in the future, because his makes him look like an angry metal pig. Despite looking like a pig, he brings in the bacon. You blast your way through four stages, each divided into three sections, and at the end of the last stage, you get to shoot Mr. Cape and save the universe. You get a choice of three weapons, which are announced to you by someone who sounds a little like John Lovitz: the big green Laser, the white bouncy Rebound, and the red spread-happy Multiple. You can also pick up a little homing missile to add even more power to your arsenal. Additionally, you can let loose bombs that wipe out everyone on the screen and roll into a ball that lays mines and drops bombs while rolling through things. It should be noted, however, that boxes with weapons in them are found almost every ten steps, so don’t get broken up if you grabbed the wrong one. Every enemy in this game explodes in a large manner, even ones that are underwater. One thing that bothered me about the Turrican series is not the appearance of a giant fist miniboss, but the fact the one stage is a blatant rip-off of the Alien series. Whenever I play through it, I keep hearing “game over, man, game over.” Still, the action is spectacular. The sound effects are good, even the strange voice for picking up powerups. The music is excellent, with some drums that actually sound like drums. It’s a good thing this game wasn’t taken off the market for copyright infringement, because it is a keeper.
