Synopsis: Astyanax is a 16 year old boy from Greenville U.S.A. he's been having this dream recently where a beautiful woman is calling out for him. (But then again I think I had that same dream a lot when I was 16 too) One day on his way to school he's transported to the magical world of Remlia by a Faerie named Cutie.
Let me pause for a moment and say that if you have yet to claw your eyes out at this less than stellar plot then I can only warn you, it get's worse.
She tells our hero that the girl in his dreams is "Princess Rosebud" who has been kidnapped by the evil magicial "Blackthorne" and his minion "Thorndog" because, they're evil and that's what they do...you are you to judge? Blackthorn doesn't come to your work and heckle you does he?
By now it shouldn't surprise you that this particular princess is being held in the highest room in the tallest tower, guarded by a vicious dragon...blech.
Long before the current trend of CG cutscenes there was Astyanax, a game that dared to put 20-30 minutes worth of cuties blinking, bobbing visage in between each level, attempting to explain the finer points of the stellar plot. It wouldn't be so bad if the plot to this game wasn't torn directly out of the pages of "fantasy plots for dummies".
As for the actual gameplay? It's pretty generic. You have an axe, you get powerups and get better axes, you go to the right, you kill things with your axe, and you jump over things.
That's pretty much it, there's 11 levels of this crap and the only consolation is that if you are ever die you lose all your powerups making the game harder than it already was and hastening your inevitable defeat.
This is one of those games that gets bought, returned and shuffled around in your local used game stores for eternity right next to old copies of Claymates and Sword of Sodan.
