[Arcade]

Title: Tempest
Author:Atari (now part of Infogrames)
Rom Player: MAME
Reviewer: Shane Skekel

Synopsis: Goddamn, It seems that there aren't more people writing reviews to vector games. The only person who actually took the time to write reviews on these is Randy Johnson, but I'm going to change that. Everyone else is too busy with the latest Half-Life piece of shit, or lame-assed football games to take the time to go to a goddamned arcade to play a truly spectacular game like this. Then again, who wants to go to an arcade as long as cookie-cutter 2D-Fighting Games, DDR(which I can tolerate)/BeatMania, Metal Slug, and various simulations are crapping up the place that spawned video games. Now onto the review:

Game Play: Similar to Space Invaders since you have to prevent your enemies from coming towards you, but that is where the similarities end and differences begin. You control a claw-style ship that is in a tube of various shapes, fighting spikes(who obstruct your path when you kill the next item on your list), flippers, and pulsars who electrify panels. For every 16 tubes you complete, they change color and the challenge increases.

Graphics: It was the first vector game in full color unlike Armor Attack, Asteroids, and Solar Quest. Therefore, it eliminated the need for an overlay.

Music & Sound: There's no music in this game, but the sound effects are rather cool.

Originality: A creative take on an two-year-old formula at that time. Plus it was the very first rail shooter if you can believe that.

In the end, Tempest is one game that should be in every arcade instead of Guilty Gear and Tekken. Therefore, Tempest gets a ten for kicking ass.

Best Cheats: If you think that this game has cheats, then you should re-evaluate your life.

Game Play: 10
Graphics: 9
Music/Sound: 5
Originality: 8
Overall Rating: 10
