View Full Version : Good metal groups

Immortal Goat

I want some names of good metal groups that aren't so mainstream that people make fun of them, but not so underground that people who listen to it feel superior. For examples on what I like, see below

Anathema (Serenades, Helm, don['t flip out on me)
Children of Bodom

Any other names to add to that list would be appreciated. :)

Therion, if you don't already listen to it, which you should >:
I don't understand why more people don't listen to Therion, everything they've done is so unbelievably awesome. Even if they are a pretty popular metal band, there's no reason I can see that they shouldn't be way more popular :( They're also on tour right now, so go get tickets you cvnts.
Fates Warning, especially the power metal albums
Suffocation, all the albums are awesome, but Human Waste stands out for me, especially the track Infecting the Crypts, which is, in my opinion, the best death metal song ever.
Cathedral can be kind of repetitive I find, but they have a lot of cool heavy sounding doom metal songs with lots of pretty melody :D
In the Woods... is good, listen to it.
Windir's pretty good too, Arntor Likferd and 1184 were good albums. To me it seems like a mix of black metal and power metal, which is kind of cheesy at first, but it'll grow on you.
Enslaved is great epic metal, Vikninglir Veldi was a spiffy album. But I'm sure there are other people who know a lot more about epic metal then me ;(
Also, Thyrfing is a pretty good viking metal band, Urkaft and Vannisevisor are solid albums, not too extreme in any way, but interesting.

Strapping Young Lad
"City" and "SYL" are both great. The upcoming "Alien" sounds promising too.

Soilwork
"Natural Born Chaos" is propably the best album, but "Figure Number Five" isnt bad either. Catchy songs.

Ensiferum
They only have two albums, but they are both awesome. They are a blend of different metal genres, but its mostly viking/death metal.

I'll give you stuff that will be easy to find:

Helloween - Walls of Jericho for good power metal

Omen - Battlecry, ditto

Hammers of Misfortune - The August Engine

now some death metal

Autopsy - Mental Funeral

Dusk - Morning Ressurect (also doomy)

and here's some progressive metal:

Heir Apparent - Graceful Inheritance

Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace

nobody will be able to make fun of these choices (although I don't see why you'd care about that, but then again, you asked so I took it into account.) 'cause these are either pretty obscure, or proven classics.

Immortal Goat

It isn't that I care about being made fun of. It is just that if I am going to be listening to music, I want respectable stuff. Not like bad rip-offs of other bands that I have never heard of.

I still go there and listen to random stuff. I love it.

I like all of Gamma Ray's stuff.

I use metal to help with programming (it has mind powers :eek ). All metal is good, but power metal gives you skillz. Scrolling through my playlist, I have stuff like Dio, Avantasia, Dark Moor, Freedom Call, Manowar, Rhapsody and Stratovarius.

as to good black metal, early Emperor are good. Gehenna are good. Enslaved are good. Weakling are good. In The Woods... are good. Ulver are good. Weakling are good. Leviathan are good.

Helm
Mar 28th, 2005, 01:46 PM
actually, not at all because CoB are power metal, and CF are proper black metal. Nothing alike, and in fact I would guess people into CF would think people into CoB are faggots

Dixie
Mar 28th, 2005, 02:05 PM
And some of us think both are fags. Let's not overwhelm the poor boy with obscure references and barely known bands that have only had one release in Hungary or something. At least just give some basic ideas of what he can start off on. Some of us know who these bands are because of being into it for so many years. But alot of them he wouldn't know from a hole in the wall. Just be a little more basic for his sake. Jumping into the arty fruitty tutti crap would probably just give him the notion to watch gay porn. And some of you, please just go away and never say the word "metal" again.
COTD

Edit:
Just to let people know the Hungary thing was a joke, I know there are some kick ass Hungarian bands.

I'm surprised no one has recommended Opeth or In Flames. I would say they are complex death metal like Children of Bodom. You should be able to find them in any good record store or amazon without too much trouble, but they're not obnoxiously mainstream either. If you’re interested listen to Opeth’s My Arms, Your Hearse or Blackwater Park and listen to In Flames’ Jester’s Race and Whoracle

One: CoB are power metal with raspy black metal-ish vocals. Not death metal, not too complex (besides the wanky solos).

Two: Nobody mentioned In Flames because they're not metal.

Three: Everybody listens to Opeth now, so it's like suggesting Metallica.

Carnivore: is the new candlemass out yet?

Another great metal band: Gorguts

Helm

I'm not a great fan either. But it *is* somewhat a case of 'had to be there' (I weren't either, tho) when CF came along and made metal scary and feral and somewhat underground again, after heavy metal had become a safe dragons and wizards campy genre. Dirty thrash metal and lots of 'UGHS' I guess. I don't think it's sacrilege or something to not like CF. Some parts of Megatherion are brilliantly orchestrated.
