ENTER OUR VILLAIN, ROBOSEAL X800. HE IS A CYBERNETICALLY-ENHANCED SEAL THAT FOR TOO LONG HAS ENDURED PEOPLE THROWING PENNIES AT HIM IN A GLASS ENCLOSURE. Note the Bloom and distance blurring effects.

Character gen has all of the parts from COH plus about 9 million more. COH suffers from having about 8 different faces to choose from, but COV has literally about 30-40 pieces for this. Also, COH subscribers who buy COV will get to use the COV parts for their COH characters as well.

Also, COV and COH share the same monthly fee ($14.99).

Replacing the Defender Archetype are Masterminds, who can control a number of pets. You have far greater control over your pets than previous COH pets and other classes in COV that get pets. Namely, you have complete control over them, can upgrade them, can name them, and can make them talk and do emotes (like getting down, as pictured). You can have up to 6 pets.

Actually, I was wrong about missions. You do still get COH-style missions where one dude orders you around, but there's also a system where you get a broker, then scan the newspaper for crap. You find things like a recent heist or a kidnapping and then find some way to make it work for you. Example!

Your base can hold a workshop, a power generator, a control room, and a medical bay in addition to decorative rooms. Each of these things actually does something - The workshop lets you build new items for your base or fix current ones with salvage that you beat out of your enemies. The generator room supplies power to the rest of the base (without it, nothing really works). The control room lets your tech devices work and does some other stuff i think. The medical bay causes you to teleport back to your base when defeated instead of the town's hospital.

Every item that is not decorative can be destroyed in a base raid, so it's good to keep backup generators and capacitors online to prevent a group of jersk from running in and blowing up your hummy thing.

I don't know. I6 is really making me not want to play CoH and I know CoV nerfs won't be far behind. they'd have to be, it's already going to take a full team to take one villain down to half health. GOD HELP US ALL IF HE CARRIES INSPIRATIONS.

I'd wait and see if I6 actually does affect you before you cry bloody murder. I5 raped fire tanks to death and I6 is really just shooting the coffin with a tommygun, but most classes won't be dramatically affected by I6.

It's still just a game, and you get to have fun with friends, which is what it's all about. Maybe you won't be able to take down 3 reds at once and won't be able to level as quick, but if that's all the game is worth to you, then go play WOW where people might care about how uber your character is.

as much as I might be regurgitating the same arguments over and over, it seems like all they're doing is nerfing. statesman has spoken. the playerbase is irrelevant. all hail statesman's vision.

Cryptic has the same problem every MMO developer does - They keep changing the game to reflect how they meant people to play it instead of accepting the way people end up playing it and adapting updates to that.

Still, the scenarios you're talking about aren't what COH has become; It's just a little more inconvenient to kill bad guys. It's a stupid change, sure, but it isn't something that cripples your ability to enjoy the game. Yet.

Unless you're a fire tanker or super reflexes scrapper, they're still totally fucked and completely unplayable.

You'd think they'd know better.

I found out last night that I'd been playing my Brute all wrong. Brutes raise a Fury meter while they're hitting or being hit, and this meter starts to make you do triple and quadruple damage if you can keep it high enough. The brute powersets are generally tanker sets reversed (invulnerability primary and super strength secondary is a Tanker set, ss pri and invul sec is a Brute set). Without Fury, Brutes do less damage than scrappers, but once you get rolling you start to mow a path of destruction that is somewhat biblical. Defense is still way worse than a Tanker, so this class isn't really a parallel to that.

Only way to play this class is to take a lot of quick, low damage attacks to boost fury, and then have one huge finishing maneuver. With full fury, your quick attacks can paste a minion at your level in one hit and your finisher can smash a boss just as quickly. The only problem is that you still take a lot of damage and you have to run from battle to battle quick as shit to maintain fury, leaving no room for you to rest and regain health. This class really shines if you have a healer or controller to manage the damage you take, allowing you to blow through missions lickety split, yo.

And here I thought the only real new thing was the Mastermind class :<

They had a big PVP event tonight on Beta. Everyone was supposed to make a new hero or villain and then you'd talk to either Statesman or Ghost Widow and get boosted to level 25. Then you'd get dropped into the PVP zone and go nuts.

God it would be annoying to always be glowing like that.

I agree, I think MMOs in general have too many 'GLOWY BRRRZAO BRZAO' effects for ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING. The glow is my 3 shields being up, and together they make it look like Jesus Christ has just entered the building.

Thing is, most people have weird effects on them either from buffs or shield powers, so everyone is glowing, on fire, covered in ice, etc. And then sometimes you get someone who makes everyone invisible on top of that, so all you can see are crazy effects. All of your offensive powers are overly flashy, too - When I uppercut someone, a big yellow sphere erupts from their head for no reason. I think it's supposed to be a shockwave?

Okay, so I've finally begun to come into some money as of recently and I'm planning on getting this game but I have one question, would the $15 I'd pay for the server fee on City of Villains double over for City of heroes or would I have to pay a full 15 bucks for each game if I wanted to play both?

The monthly fee for both games is a combined $15. If you've bought the retail copy of villains and heroes, you can play as either a hero or villain. If you've only bought the retail copy of one game, you can only play as one of those groups. But it's still $15/month either way.

Two jerks at once! (A Brute and his Corr buddy)

I decided to run the missle strike mission which is in Warburg (pvp zone). You have to basically go underground and rescue scientists and get them home and they'll give you codes. You take the codes to a computer underground, then you have to get to an above-ground computer within 3 minutes. All of this while people can attack you.

So in the process of saving scientist #2, I was clearing the path out of the underground and I foot-stomped and this player appeared and fell on his ass (A stalker - assassin class. He was hiding and probably about to try to do something awful to me). So then i murdered him more or less by accident while I fought the weird spidery guys to get out. Anyway, that dude had a code, so I took it. 2 out of three codes OBTAINED and on my way to get the third, he tried to kill me again on our way out but i murdered him in two hits.

So I take that scientist home and I have all 3 keys. I run back to the underground and put them in and there's this Mastermind (pet class, dude has 6 WAR ROBOTS) near the compy so his bots start shooting at me. I only have 3 minutes so I download the shit from the compy and book it and lo and fucking behold, that first player i killed (the stalker) is hiding by the final computer and has thrown caltrops all over it so I can't use it (getting hit will interrupt the codes and caltrops do a constant 1 damage while you're on them).

People just chillin' outside the hospital after I've sent them there.
So I popped an insight so i could see him (insights are the yellow accuracy boosts that also raise your perception, allowing you to see hiding players) and we fought for like 2 minutes cause he kept healing over and over. Eventually he tried to run away and I crushed his head with an airborne rock.

And then got to the compy and won! HOORAY!

Meanwhile emily was stuck underground cause she was invis but that Mastermind was still trying to make his way topside but he left his bots near another scientist to speed things up for him. Unfortunately, they were in the way for Emily to get out, so I run in and give his pets a yell-down-war-hell-ride. The MM shows up and he puts up personal force field (really strong shield, makes it almost impossible to hit you, but you can't directly attack either. However, since Masterminds have pets that isn't so much an issue), so I pop 3 insights and did horrible things to him.

Then I went outside and got assaulted by this team of 4 dudes. I murder 2 of them, then their brute teleports me to the top of this building where he plans to GIVE ME WHAT FOR and hits me with his 2 best attacks. They do laughable damage and I punch him off the building and sent a rock down after him, which ends his career. Then I basically picked apart his friends and the hero that was trying to bring them to JUSTICE and ran home.

The biggest danger when fighting Masterminds is the framerate debuff.

You should get Hero Builder by SherkSilver for that. You can just run a search on google to find it. Basically decide on what you want your strengths to be and then dick around until you max them out. For Payback, I wanted max resist and pvp utility and arranged my powers around those.

I can take the whole gang on field trips to Warburg soon! Beta Decay is in his 30s and DPMO is 34-35 (and of course i'm 40) ;< Soon as DPMO hits 35s I can lackey someone else and when she hits 36 she can lackey someone too.

But yeah, it's really more of a city of lovable scamps. Sometimes you even do missions that are unquestionably hero work, like all of Hard Case's shit in St. Martial - Every mission of his is SAVE MARTIAL or SAVE MARTIAL'S CITIZENS. Because it's OUR TURF TOO. I could give a fuck less about Martial. I WANTED to help the carnies kill it, but Hard Case got into their plotline too and made me go on a quest of glory to drive the heathens from our lands.

To be fair you do get some really fucked-up missions too, like the new one where you drive to a steel factory and kidnap homeless people for this mad scientist to perform experiments on them.

Yeah and some of the badges and enhancements that mention being a Hero in it. and all the heros get the same clothing pieces right? I dont get it.

Actually no, heroes only got a few extra costume pieces in I6. In I7 though, they're expected to unlock the majority of the villain clothing pieces for heroes.

Was playing around on the test server and just happened to be in Nerva. Apparently there was some test of a Giant Monster that had been bugged in test for awhile. CuppaJo (Some popular head moderator from the forums or something seeing as 200 people were trying to eat her out.)

Um.... so she came to hold everyones hand and tell them how to summon the monster.

She's a Fire/Fire/Fire blaster, lvl 50, with 1 debt badge so everyone said they boosted her up or something.

Right now in Juju we have:

Mr Payback (Me): Super Strength / Invulnerability Brute
DPMO (MLE): Radiation / Thermal Corruptor
Beta Decay (Daniel): Energy / Ninjitsu Stalker
Bose (Matt Harty): Energy / Thermal Corruptor
Some new chick (Elegy): ? / Thermal Corruptor
Voodoo Queen (Jin): Dark / Zombie Mastermind (never plays)
Swamp Rat (Eye-Tie): Dark/Dark Brute (never plays)

And some others and some alts that don't log on often.

Thermals are the most support/healing oriented archetype, but we have enough for a bit now. Pjalne might be joining soon, and Beta Decay may be adding his SS/INV brute to the group soon. Also we have a guy from the UK joining as a Dom.

As for what we need, we could really use a Dominator. Lacking that, another brute would be good. Stalker is 3rd preference, and that's just for making people sad in pvp.

I have a great guide for Dominators and I can teach anyone how to be succesful with a brute ;< But you should play all the archs a bit to find out what you like best.

Brutes: The most HP of villain classes, has the highest defense/resistance caps and the highest damage caps of all villain archetypes. Has the inherent power 'fury' which builds as you swing at people or are swinged at. When it's full you can do 3X damage. Right now this class is decimating and with the right powers is near invincible as well. In PVP they are probably 2nd best in damage because it's hard to build fury in PVP. Mostly melee. As powers go, it's generally recommended to go with Super Strength, Dark, or Energy for primary and Fire, Invulnerability, or Stone as a secondary. Issue 7 will introduce electricity to this Archetype.

Stalkers: The least HP of villain classes, can do a LOT of damage with their assassin strikes. Probably the biggest deviation from typical play as you can't stand and fight. Combat is usually hit-and-run and you'll need to play with others. Class doesn't really come into its own until about level 30, which will take a few weeks. Reviled in Warburg, where they hide everywhere and gank people. Mostly melee. Energy primary does the most damage right now but will be toned down in the next issue. I7 will add dark as a secondary to this Arch.

Dominators: 2nd-least HP of villains, they have no passive defenses, meaning you have to pay attention to every mob in the area and keep them locked down with your powers. Does a fair amount of damage and is a great Arch to have in large teams to lock down the huge spawns. Mostly ranged. Gravity is more damage-oriented than the other control sets and needs to be used with knowing exactly what you're doing to be used effectively. Psionics does way less damage than the other assault sets, and almost no damage to non-thinking enemies (zombies, robots, etc).

Masterminds: The most boring archetype to most people, you get up to 6 pets which you can directly command. Probably best for people used to RTS's. The powers that the mastermind has (aside from spawns) are the weakest of all the Archs, with the notable exception of Personal Force Field. Mostly ranged. Force bubbles are almost useless except for PFF which basically protects the MM from anything bad ever happening.

Corruptors: Like COH's defenders, corruptors are a mix of damage and support. You can play the class either way but it's often more effective as a support Arch. Can do double damage to opponents with less than half HP remaining. Mostly ranged. Thermal and Kinetics are the only real support secondaries in the class (or the game), and you'll see a lot of them out there as there isn't a definitive 'healer' class in COV.

if you're equal or higher level than the mobs or you have some good buffs, you can keep big groups of jerks held at bay

i have a dom and she's fun as shit to play :< it's like a person with ADD's wet dream, you're always targetting people and whizbanging them around. they're like controllers only they do way more damage, have less hp, and have no passive defenses.

gravity doms are the best for this cause where most doms get a soft hold, they get another attack that flings a dude into the air. if you time it right it works just like a hold but is really high maintenence (so the set is pretty strong, it effectively has two single-target hard holds if you can juggle correctly). the gravity pet at 32 (singularity) has the highest HP of all the dom pets and has a permanent repel shield on. Combined with ragdoll it's a bobbing hilarity buoy ;<

gravity also has some really, really bad powers. Like propel, where you summon a random object and throw it at someone (takes about 7 seconds to pop off) and gravity distortion, which is an AOE phase shift that works on the enemies. Which means they can't hit you, but you can't hit them. So it sucks.

Juju has a mission computer in the base now! Now we can do SG Strike Forces and trials! HOORJ.

I'm not sure how low your budget is, but it seemed a bit too much for me too. I stopped spending so much money on food one month, and that was enough to cover 3 months of cov. It's well worth it if you play often.

that's a great framerate :< my game doesn't run that well even without fraps running ;<

matt i just cap at half-size, 29.97 framerate. the files are huge at first, but then i run it through virtualdub, compressing audio to 22k @ 96kps mp3, and compressing video to xvid @ 4-10 compression.

You can get the xvid codecs from free-codecs.com through the klite codec pack. Virtualdub just look for on google.

If someone makes a new character in this game, how long would it take for them to be able to group/party with people who already had 40s?

you can be lackeyed at any time, even at level 1. the problem is figuring out when you'll be any good to the team, which depends on your powers and enhancements. with my dark/invulnerability brute, I'm only now beginning to hold my own in level 40+ missions and I'm level 25.

I think the lesson here is "don't pick dark anything for a power set"
