So, Thursday Morning at 0900 (military lingo for 9:00 a.m.) I was sworn into the Coast Guard. I have just 1 month left before being shipped. But I'm all set.
Getting a 3k sign-up bonus. (most Coasties get NOTHING)
And going in as a E3.
Oh, and the job I'm shooting for is called "Surfmen" They are the ones in the boats that go zooming through Hurricane force seas, (which are known as average days in the Pacific Ocean.)
So, I got one Month left with you guys. Damn, I'll miss this place. It is my internet home.

The ranks of the Vets is being whittled down. I never thought I'd see the day when damnthatdavid left :(
You were my favourite vet.
DamnthatDavid
Oct 7th, 2006, 01:05 AM
I never really considered myself a vet. :/
I'll be back once I get stationed, and get my own place, and get a new computer, and etc.

Is E3 your eligibility qualification? 'Cuz if so, I thought that E3 meant they were really really desperate and at that point were handing rifles to pre-schoolers and bed-wetters. I think my grandfather missed the WWII draft for having an F-classification because of his weird skin condition.
I'm not saying anything personal, I just thought that's what it meant.
DamnthatDavid

heh, different ranking system.
E stands for Enlisted.
Most people go in as E-1, which is your basic private, with standard pay. If you have a higher education, you get Stripes for Skills. So I get bumped past E-2 and into the paygrade of E-3.
I believe a typical Sergent level is E-5 in the army. Not sure what it is in the Coast Guard.
Officers are O, and GS is General Service, which is working for the government. My father is a GS-12. its about the same level as a Colonel I believe, but being none military, he doesn't get the perks.

I'll get back to you on that one.
Muchos congrats on the life/career move. Signing away your soul is never an easy move.
Never my soul, just my life. It isn't going anywhere at this time.
Honestly, I could spend 4 years working in dead-end jobs and with luck, might break into a career, or spend 4 years making money in something that looks hella fun. I could even take more college level courses while enlisted.

thanks all. It sure is nice having great support from a community of online people. Without you all, I might have been dead by now.
Once I get all stationed with a place with internet powers, I will be back. Half a year to a year.
Is this why you called me out of the blue to go drinking ON A WEEKNIGHT when I couldn't possibly come?
That was because I was hungry. the 21 21 Pub has AWESOME hamburgers and Joes for cheap.
The drinks are just a bonus.

DamnThatDavid, we shall miss you. Even though I've been here for like a month. And find some way to get on here once and awhile, people stationed in Iraq can somehow play World of Warcraft so I think you can post something in the next four years. Good luck![/img]
