i really want one
i was reading up on all the Wii channels and its making me want it more. Things like a photo editor, access to the news and the weather and that opera web browser has got me really excited for its release. The fact that its all gonna be wifi makes me even that much more excited.
I could just see it. You start up your wii and check the news and weather. After that you pop in the lastest action RPG and take out a few monsters using your awesome gun that you just aquired. Before you know it tho its time for you to go, so you pull out your DS and connect the two together. After a few seconds you have your character from the game on your DS screen. Closing the lid your on your way. You finally get a few minutes to your self so you start leveling up your character on the DS using similar techs with the Stylus as you do with the Wiimote. You gain a new level and with the increased power you also get an even more bad ass gun.
After your day is over and a little more dungeon crawling with the awesome new gun you go back home and upload your character and the awesome new weapon to your Wii. Then take it online to show off to all your friends.
I feel like cartman. Im gonna freeze myself so the 2 week wait seems shorter.

Nintendo Wii Versus PlayStation 3

See Comments (4)
I had the good fortune on Friday to get some back-to-back hands-on with two next-gen consoles that are about to launch this month: the Nintendo Wii (November 19) and the Sony PlayStation 3 (November 17). This was in addition to some hands-on I got a couple of months ago. This holiday, the big question for gamers (or people who need to write out a list for Santa) is: Which console should I get? Here's a rundown of the main features of each.
Price: Sony PlayStation 3 will cost $499 for the base model (20GB hard drive) and $599 for the premium model (60GB hard drive, Memory Stick slot). The Nintendo Wii will cost $249.
Specs: Sony has made a big deal out of the PS3's ultra-powerful, computer-in-a-console Cell processor chip, an upgradeable 20- or 60-gigabyte hard disk drive, 1080p resolution, networking capability, and HDMI outputs, while Nintendo's Wii simply has PowerPC CPU, 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, a couple of USB 2.0 ports, an SD memory card slot, and Wi-Fi capability. But as John Gapper points out in his Financial Times column today, most gamers don't care about the innards, they just care about the games!
Launch lineup: Nintendo has promised 62 titles before year's end, even though about 30 of those are classic games from previous platforms available for download on the Virtual Console. Regardless, it's still a hefty launch lineup (compare that to Xbox 360's 18 titles last year). Meanwhile, Sony has promised 21 titles for the launch. Sorry, but new or old, Nintendo's got game in the launch titles department.
Games: Sony has the much-awaited Resistance: Fall of Man, a creepy FPS set in an alternate-history 1940s, but the platform really shines with full-1080p versions of NBA 07 (which is almost scary-realistic) and Marvel Ultimate Alliance (unparalleled detail and clarity on the PS3 version). Sony has a lot of the other big titles, too, including Call of Duty 3 (essentially the same as the Xbox 360 version, with some wireless controller elements added), Tony Hawk Project 8 (wireless controller elements), and Need for Speed: Carbon, among others.
Meanwhile, a game that garnered a lot of applause at E3, the explosa-palooza Motor Storm, looks stunning but still needs a lot of work in the handling department, and where-oh-where is Gran Turismo HD? Nintendo on the other hand has title-after-title of first-party strengths, from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy to Excite Truck and WarioWare: Smooth Moves (not to mention the phenomenally easy to pick-up-and-play Wii Sports included with the console). And third-party-wise, Madden for Wii is a truly revolutionary addition to the gaming canon (not to mention some other cool third-party titles).
HD or not HD: This is my own personal obsession, since I am such a nut for the unrivaled big screen clarity of anything in 1080p resolution. Nintendo has opted for 480p, which is the same resolution you'll find on most current systems and on DVDs (perfectly impressive for the year 2000, but looking a little tired these days). So the Wii games don't look all that different from Gamecube games in terms of graphic clarity, detail, and realism, but since when has anyone needed realism in a Mario game, anyway?
Meanwhile, Sony is putting a lot of the PS3's claim to fame on the console's ability to show in full 1080p resolution. The 1080p games—Marvel Ultimate Alliance and NBA 07—I saw on Friday night blew me away visually. I was able to stand a mere eight inches away from the screen and still not see any graininess or pixels! But this is more of a gee-whiz kind of a thing for 1080p dorks such as myself. Most people either don't have 1080p or won't care. Besides, only two of Sony's launch titles are in 1080p: Big ones such as Resistance: Fall of Man and Call of Duty 3 are in 720p, just like the year-old Xbox 360!
Extras: The big differentiator between the PS3 (and, while we're at it, the Xbox 360) and the Wii is the former's inclusion of a Blu-ray disc player. This means that the PS3 can play high-def movies on the new Blu-ray disc format-in full 1080p resolution via an HDMI connection. 1080p is as stunning for movies as it is for games, but again you'll need a 1080p TV to partake. It also means that photos will look just as crisp and clear using the PS3 as movies do.
Nintendo, on the other hand, also has a picture viewer, but images on that console won't look as nice, for obvious reasons. Still, Nintendo's machine is at least $250 less than Sony's. And the last I heard, these were gaming consoles, right? It's slightly obnoxious of Sony to force perfectly innocent gamers to buy a machine with pricey, dicey movie technology built in (and don't forget that Sony is one of the companies behind Blu-ray). At least Nintendo sticks to the business at hand—gaming—and gives you the choice between buying your own player or nothing at all!
Controllers: Sony has experimented with motion-sensitivity ever since EyeToy, but Nintendo has taken the technology one step further by making it an integral part of its new console. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk combination is integral to every single Wii game. As a result, motion-sensitivity is used to great effect, whether to swat the tennis balls in Wii Sports or to catch fish in Zelda. And many games—Wii Sports, Red Steel, and others—were designed with the Wii controller in mind from the get-go.
Sony's SIXAXIS controller, on the other hand, is still a work in progress and feels like a gimmicky add-on to already existing titles such as Call of Duty 3 (where you use it to grapple) and Tony Hawk Project 8 (where you use it to flip your board). In other words, you don't need the SIXAXIS to play some of these games, so the gameplay isn't inherently conducive to a wireless, tilt controller. That said, Sony has some other games, such as Warhhawk (due out next summer) that are being created from the ground-up to take advantage of the SIXAXIS, so this imbalance between the competing consoles' controllers may change in the future.
Availability: Sony says it will have 400,000 units for sale in the U.S. at launch (with two million available globally by year's end), so good luck getting one. Meanwhile Nintendo hasn't released specific numbers for U.S. units at launch, but says it will have four million consoles available globally by year's end. If you want a new console this holiday and don't want to pull an all-nighter in line or pay through the nose, the choice is clearly in Nintendo's favor.
Conclusion: On many levels, it's almost apples and oranges when comparing these two consoles, since they're just not trying to do the same thing. Nintendo really wants the Wii to be all about gaming, whereas Sony seems to be making a big deal out of the PS3's superior technology and extra functionality. So for gamers, it might seem to be a no-brainer to just go for the Wii.
But let's not forget that Sony still has about 70 percent of the market share for games. The company has managed to milk every last bit out of the PS2, mainly because there was so much in that once state-of-the-art device to milk. If some truly amazing games come out in the next few months, along with more hardware at lower prices, Sony could bounce back. And early reports from consumers who have had a chance to play PS3 games are positive. But if it's fun games and a new console you want this holiday season, go with the Wii, or, as I've said many times before, the Xbox 360 (which gives you the best of both worlds—new games and HD resolution!)
Anybody have their heart set on a Wii or a Playstation 3? If you like the PlayStation 3, why? If you like Wii, why? And who would rather just skip this year's face-off and go for an Xbox 360?

the PS3 looks like a really well made console, silent running and those groovy buttons, its a machine that will really be good once the next wave of games come out for it, as in my view there isnt many great games coming out for a bit (except MGS4 and resistance which looks cool)
the wii has a lot more games that i would love to play in the launch window.
its definitly a console i would like to get in a few years, as long as there are a load of decent games by that stage, but for now, its the Wii/360 for me
anyway, whats everyone planning to get at launch? for me its Wii sports, rayman and zelda, and maybe Wii play as i plan to get a second remote anyway

As promising as the PS3 looks, it just doesn't compare to the Wii for myself. The fact that I can be playing NES, SNES etc again (legally) is something in itself.
And let's not forget Metal Slug. :)
I'll most likely just be picking up Zelda, I hope it meets its tremendous expectations.

I could not for the life of me see how I could play the new Zelda on the Wii. It would feel too wierd for me to use two unattached sets of buttons to move around.
I might just pick up a Gamecube now that the Wii is coming out.
But I will have all consoles at one point or another. I have my heart set on the X-Box 360 first, though, as it was released first. Then I'll be getting the Wii as it will be cheaper than the PS3. But, the PS3 is sexy and powerful and MGS4 is coming out and connectivity with the PSP makes it a buy for me. Overall, I'm sure we'll look back on this new generation of consoles like they were tinker toys or something. Technology keeps getting better and at a faster and faster rate.
I know one thing that's make the Wii an instant success:
VIRTUAL REALITY HELMETS.

First I hated it, then I kinda liked it (because it heard good things about mario), now I just don't know. I don't think the controller is that gimicky (but I had a killer joke about it catering to the handheld fishing game crowd) and I think it might be fun in some aspects. I don't care enough to get it at launch (the new zelda looks pretty fucking ugly).
I might just get a DS, because it has mario kart and I like mario kart.

Well it's a given that I'll be getting one but for me it's just a question of trying to get one at launch or wait a bit. At this point I don't think I really care about getting it on day 1. So many cool games came out recently that I'm pretty satisfied for the moment.

over the next 2 weeks, 85 games are being realised between, Wii, ps3, new xbox and 360 games, DS and GBA. Its gonna be fun, but really stressful.
If you get a chance, crack open this months game pro and check out the laughly biased article where they compare the three systems together. Like in memory, PS3 has the least amount of flash memory, but for some reason it got the highest score between the three. And the overall scores between the PS3 and the 360 and the same, but 360 came in as the runner-up. Also go a few more pages and check out the incredibly bland Wii release article, the go a few more pages and check out the awesome PS3 lauch article.
i found out gamepro got bought up by some PS magazine like a few years ago.
Edit: i just pulled it out and started reading again. The compairsion artical busts on 360's overheating problem, but says nothing about the PS3 worse one. ;_;

Yeah, same thing for me and it's a shame because I think it's the only thing really preventing me from wanting one. I'd much rather sit back with a controller in my hands and not be moving around to get my character to swing a sword, or whatever the fuck they plan to do with it.

so i actually got to play one the other day. I got to play excite truck and it was actually really responsive. I was expecting there to be some lag when you turned but it actually worked pretty well. Going over bumps and collecting power ups while the controller vibrated and made neat sounds felt really natural. Also while in the air, tilt the controller backwards and the nose will go up, tilt it forward and the nose will go down. If you hit the ground level you would get a nice boost. Flight sims would rock on this system.
I then checked out some of the other channels, and like how it advertised, it does come packed with the forcast, news and internet right out of the box. A neat little thing that they included is the hand on the screen you chose stuff with will turn upside down when you turn the controller upside down.
My only beefs is the placement of the buttons make it feel weird. like the 1 and 2 button are really far away from where your hand rests. Also you dont point it at the screen, you have to point it near the sensor, which at first was akward but i got used to it. the movement felt smoother than a light gun. With light gun games, im very shakey and it shows on the screen. With the wii it moved really well and didnt really shake all over the screen like i expected it too.
Even tho it was a kinda restricted demo, and i didnt even get to play the game i wanted. It was pretty neat to get some hands on time with the system.
Im gonna get one as soon as i can.

about 90% of their 'wii experience' videos feature only women. I wonder if that's supposed to be part of their market segmentation strategy or if they're going 'LOOK FELLAS EVEN RETARDS CAN USE IT.'
I played a Wii yesterday. And it was real good. I liked it.
The controller doesn't really 'shock and awe', it just feels very natural and you could forget it's even there, which is right where I think Nintendo needs to be - It needs to be the Wii that is the successful instrument, not its peripherals. Using the pointer feels better than I thought it would - all your natural jitters are smoothed out by the software and the controller vibrates a lil when you mouse over each option, creating a very solid feel. Even using the onscreen keyboard (to name my Mii) was way less awkward than with an analog or digital stick.
The excitetruck demo felt like pretty much any arcade racing game, with ridiculous jumps and powerups and simple controls. Steering seemed a little too sensitive, but I imagine you can adjust the sensitivity in the game on your home system.
It's a good system with lots of potential. Hopefully, enough developers will rise to the occasion and make innovative games for the system, rather than using the new technology as an afterthought as is the case in so many DS games.

I did what you're saying, Chojin. Alot of developers simply saw the DS as another Gameboy, and didn't use things like Wifi and the top screen to its advantage. I enjoyed fighting two fronts in Advance Wars, and Phoenix Wright used it well too. I'm afraid alot of developers are gonna see the Wii as another Gamecube, and since the hardware isn't that far removed, it's easy to fall into that trap.
I've got high hopes for the Revolution. Prince and the Revolution was amazing, I think this can be too. This new generation of gamers are too focused on graphics, and forget that innovation and other things come first. I'm not worried that Zelda doesn't have top notch graphics, I won't be worried that every bead of sweat won't be rendered on Link's face. When OoT came out, the graphics weren't that good, but it's possibly the best of the series.

i was over at my friends house playing wii, and some more dude came over with there wiimotes. we all bowled, and now there mii's are always hanging out in the back ground when you bowl....

i love my wii.
I got Red Steel and everyone talked me into zelda last night.
Wii sports is fun, some of the games feel clunky and some are just plain annoying. Tennis is okay, but gets kinda boring after a few matches mainly because all your doing is swinging. Snorefest. Baseball is fun two player but for some reason i can not hit the ball strait. Every hit is a foul ball and every time i manage to hit the ball into the field someone catches it. Annoying. Bowling is one of the best games on it. Having worked in a bowling alley i can say that they got the mechanics of bowling perfect. All it needs is a short bald guy next to you yelling about you talking to loud is messing up his game. Awesome. Golf could have been better. No matter how many practice shots i take and make it perfect, when it comes to the real deal i always wind up slicing it. Putting is a CHORE, but it teaches you control. This game is great multiplayer, at least till super swing golf comes out. Cant wait. Finally boxing. Probably the worst game on the thing. I jumped into it thinking it would be a blast. Played a few matches and downed a few people. So a friend came over and we started playing it together. With no training or even playing the game before he somehow managed to beat me by just flailing around. Annoying.
But just like the burger king games its hard to complain about the game mainly because it was free. for some reason to me a games faults seem to wash away as long as my wallet doesnt get any thinner.
Red Steel is a lot of fun. After getting used to the controls its really fun to hop into the game and run and gun. Its cool because they dont lay everything in front of you like most FPS do. Hell you dont even get grenades till you get like 40 percent in the game. The story is good and keeps throwing surprises at you the entire time. The sword fighting is one of the downpoints. Its clunky and unresponsive. The system is suppost to be a mix of dodging, parrying and counter-strikes. But breaks down to swinging the controllers around trying to get in a hit because that bastard never leaves an open spot and just blocked like 7 hits in a row. Kinda gets lame after a bit. I was hoping it was gonna get better when i got to the sword school, but i didnt learn anything new other than another technique that never manages to work half the time. Multiplayer is disapointing as well and work way better online, and all you can do is gun fights, swords are kinda used as a melee attack but i think a cool sword fight would totallly work in this game.
I got zelda last night, its cool. Zelda review over.

Oh man its another 6 days before it is released to Australia! Well at least here i won't have to worry about line-ups or anything like that.
What I find surprising with people's views on their games, is that everyone says Red Steel is good. I had ready some reviews saying it was a stinker of a game but I guess game reviewers can be harsh sometimes
Chojin
Nov 30th, 2006, 09:33 PM
I wrote a big review on red steel in this forum, but to briefly recap, the game is a mediocre shooter with nice touches and controls that, while still way more awkward than they should be, really define the experience.
It's going to be a while before another company makes a realistic shooter for the Wii (Prime 3 not included in blanket statement), so I'd recommend picking it up and learning to work the controls. But man, if there was ever a game that needed a 'quick turn-around' button, this is it.

Well the Wii was released in Australia yesterday ^_^.
The midnight launch was pretty impressive for Darwin, I was expecting around 10 people but ended up being about 100. I bought: Wii play, Rayman Raving Rabids, Super Monkey ball and Legend of Zelda. So far the games have all been VERY impressive, all the games work really well with the controler and the amount of times it didn't function are very minimum.
Rayman has been great and probably has my most play time at the moment, all the games are really fun and the beat games would have to be my favorite so far.
Wii Play and Wii sports are both suprisingly good for free games, both games get you used to the control and how it all works so it was easy to get used to.
Zelda is another game I have been very impressed with, I was a bit worried about the controller for it but I think the Wiimote/nunchuck combo work really well.
Super monkey ball has also been really fun and the controls work really well in it, the single player is the best so far in the series, however it seems alot of the party games were rushed becasue out of the 50 about 35 are painful to play becasue of their unresponsiveness, I have found Disc golf to be the worst out of these games and becasue of its faults, it took around half an hour to do a 3 hole match becasue the game decided to do whatever the fuck it wanted.
All in all i am very impressed with Nintendo's next gen console and if it keeps it up, the will have something very powerful in thier hands

ive been waiting for this console for 14 months and im happy with what i got overall
I got the wii, zelda and an extra wiimote.
Wii sports is quite fun. I can't really complain since its free but tennis is a bit boring....but i do like serving.
Baseball is so fucking annoying. I hit it and its rolling on the ground and its bouncing and someone catches it and its out...and how they have the single, double, triple systems is fucked up also.
Bowling i absolutely love. The controls work so well and u can put spin on it and everything. its just done so well
Im not a big fan of golf in real life but it works pretty well despite the occassional flinching of the club.
I like boxing also.....it gives you quite a workout
Zelda is enjoyable so far

played a bit more rayman today, its a shame you have to unlock games in single player before you can play them in multiplayer, buts its still pretty fun overall
Chojin
Dec 9th, 2006, 01:19 PM
My biggest bitch with rayman is that there's no multiplayer mode where it just runs you through a bunch of shit automatically, and most of the minigames aren't things I'd choose of my own volition. I think they should have dropped all 4 raymans in the coliseum and then whomever gets to a door first plays that game :< and so on until someone wins 10 games or something. A lot of the games only let each player try something quick once (like cow tossing), which makes it really short and really sucky if you miss the field entirely.
Schimid played red steel for 10 minutes last week and got in that mode of his where he's like THIS SUCKS THIS SUCKS I WILL TRY MY BEST TO HATE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS NOW OH GUNS HUH THAT'S ORIGINAL but I forced him at remote-point to play it with me in multi last night and we had a lot of fun :> The restaurant is the best multi level by far - it's designed really well and most of the rooms are huge but separated by things that contain shootable glass. Even the restaurant area itself has lots of big windows you can blow out and toss grenades in. Also using the sword in multiplayer is hilarious as it just stuns your opponent for a few seconds, letting you end them EXECUTIONER-STYLE. Highlight of the night was probably when Schimid rolled a grenade UNDER a door that I was so cleverly hiding behind ;<
Microshock, if you're hitting grounders in Wii Sports Baseball, try swinging the remote upwards.

I went to my friends house last night and tried the Wii :) :/ He is a buyer for a major chain of stores and has every new console except the PS3.
The Wii game play is fun but so limited because the controllers are akward and don't really react smoothly, like Golf (my friends kids are really good at it already and seemed bored with it and mainly played games on the PC while I was there.
I played Elibits and got dizzy and bored with it quick.
I'm a war game buff and didn't like Metal of Honour 3 on this console at all...
The kids did't try Legend of Zelda, so that tells me something.
I would't buy this unless it was really cheap...
I also tried the XBox 360 and I will wait for it to become cheap.
I think being patient for these kinds of Consoles to come down in price is really worth the wait considering games like the Wii not really being as advanced as I expected.

TORONTO, Dec 14 (Reuters Life!) - Video gamers relish violence on the screen but now players are becoming victims themselves -- of the latest gaming technology in which a wireless, wand-like device is used to direct on-screen action.
Using Nintendo's Wii, the most talked about of three new game consoles out this holiday, players of seemingly harmless games such as bowling and tennis are being left battered and bruised by the controller, not to mention damaging television screens and nearby ceiling fans and computers.
Nintendo has cautioned players on using a wrist strap with the controller and keeping their palms dry but Jim Walsh's blog (www.WiiHaveAProblem.com) is dedicated to sharing some of the amusing -- and embarrassing -- stories of what he calls "the latest trend in gaming violence."
Walsh, a Cleveland-based operating systems operator, launched the site last month after hearing his first Wii damage story -- his friend's remote crashed into his big-screen television -- to see what would happen.
He has been flooded with similar stories.
The site has received 3 million page views since it launched, and he receives 20 to 30 e-mails a day detailing woeful tales of over-enthusiastic players and Wii damage.
"Nintendo built a system that's fun," Walsh told Reuters in a phone interview. "You get really into it. Your hands get sweaty, next thing you know your remote goes flying into the dog."
Or your head -- which happened to one site contributor, Nicole, while she was bowling.
"I swung really hard to knock down the 50 plus pins and all of a sudden I realized my head hurt," wrote Nicole in a post accompanied by close-up pictures of her bruise.
"I was wearing the tether instead of it flying wildly into the air it stopped and swung back around and hit me in the head." She notes that she was sober at the time.
SAD MIX OF ALCOHOL AND WII
The site has its fair share of "we were playing Wii and drinking" stories which end up with a broken object or an injured person.
Then there are incidents when the wrist strap attached to the remote breaks, causing pain of the financial sort.
"A friend of mine that never plays video games actually got into playing the Wii," posts Dopefish. "About an hour into the festivities, he was bowling with too much enthusiasm and too little strap-around-the-wrist. BAM. Wii-mote, meet my $3,500 TV."
Since the bowling, throwing, swinging movement of the motion-sensitive remote corresponds directly with the action in the video game, the fate of an innocent television screen, for instance, rests in the hands of the user and the wrist-strap.
Nintendo has since addressed the wrist-strap issue. The company has released a thicker strap and has posted a safety warning on its Web site, highlighting, in bold, all-caps: "Do not let go of the Wii remote itself."
Walsh admitted that some of the Wii injuries and damage shared on his blog might have been prevented by following the safety information, but he also said toning it down may help.
"You have to remember that you're not really serving a ball at 90 miles an hour ... so you don't end up on the front of my Web site," he said.

What's the best distance to stand away from the sensor bar? The room her wii's in is kind of hard to move around in and is pretty compact, and all the movements seem too sensitive.
Chojin
Jan 6th, 2007, 11:53 PM
Best distance is dependent on what you have near the TV - try moving any lights away from the screen, and keep the remote at least 3' away. Other than that, you can adjust the sensor bar sensitivity in the options.
Bragging about my site? How does that even work? Thanks, though!

the gameplay of it is surprisingly good, but man there are a bunch of little annoyances. i noticed the gamecube controller thing the very first time i turned the game on and you pretty much have to turn of the sound while item fusing or the same 3 sound clips played over and over will drive you insane.
and i still don't understand what the character creation is supposed to do
Schimid
Jan 16th, 2007, 02:08 PM
I found out about the character creation.
"Custom characters" is pretty misleading. What you can do, in theory, is find a password for one of your characters (like an overpowered Bradock) and enter it on another person's game to play as your own character. Basically it's a password to unlock a custom character. It's pretty cool, but I don't think people'll really pick up on it.
Great gameplay, terrible production values. There's sound EVERYWHERE

I'm surprised that companies were suprised when the Wii didn't top the holiday sales but instead the 360 came out on top. They gotta make sure they have enough systems eventually come launch day. But I digress, I have not tried out the Wii. I'm cautious because it looks gimmicky but so did the DS and I loved that. Of course, I have 22 dollars, so I just need someone to say the Wii is awesome.

Everyone expected the 360 to come out on top for total holiday '06 sales - It was available for an entire year, has a year's worth of games, and has way more stock ready to be bought.
As the launches went, the Wii had the best launch of all 3 systems, but the other launches were fucked up so badly by their own companies that the achievement alone doesn't say much.

I just got a Wii over the weekend, so now i feel like jumping on the bandwagon and giving you my impressions instead of going to class. So here goes!
Mii channel: This is the first thing I did after setting the system up (obviously) and the mii creator is actually a pretty powerful tool for making caricatures of people, save for one GLARING weakness: REDHEADS ARE S.O.L.!!!!! This leaves my girlfriend and one of roommates in a quite pissed-off mood after being left with little brown-haired fags that only half look like them. Besides that, though, one of the most powerful and user-friendly avatar creators I've ever used, if used correctly.
Wii Sports: There is not much I could say here that has not already been said elsewhere: bowling is great, tennis and baseball are ok, golf is hard as hell, but boxing is where I dissagree with much of what I've read. I love wii boxing and I'm not ashamed to say that. Sure, the gloves don't do exactly what you want them to all the time, but KOing the deuche in front of me with a right hook to the knee is among the most satisfying things I've done in my life. A note about golf: my roomate Bart, who actually has some golf experience, totally owns at wii golf. Coincidence, or great programming? I truly wonder.
Lengend of Zelda: Twilight Princess: It seems to happen that when people get a wii, they play LOZ for about five minutes before setting it aside to play a more quick-fix kind of game, and I turned out to be no exception. It appears to be Zelda game: looks like one, sounds like one, smells like one, which is all I ask of this game, so I'm imressed so far. However, whichever asshole at Nintendo felt that the Navi pointer just HAD to make noise when moved needs to be strangled with a pair of nunchuks. Real ones.
Sorry, that was corny.
Trauma Center: Second Opinion: There are naysayers, many of whom live with me, that are quick to pass this up based on concept alone. These people are retarded. This is, by far, the most fun I've had with the wii yet. The pointer is amazingly accurate, as if you're using a laser pointer instead of the usually-slightly-latent wii remote, which begs the question: How the hell does Atlas understand the wiimote better than Nintendo? Performing surgury in this game is immemsely addictive, and a smooth learning curve keeps things interesting without too much frustration.
Trust me. This is what you bought a Wii for.
Far Cry: Vengeance: I needed a shooter with multiplayer that didn't have "Red Steel" anywhere in the name, so I snagged this.
Crytec did an excelent job of covering up the fact that they have no idea how the wiimote works yet. Meaning: this game is loaded with all kinds of options available (aim-helper, camera helper, etc.) that when turned off to minimize noobishness leaves you in a clunky shooter that pales in comparison to Wolfenstein 3D. Turing these option on (which they are automatically *cough cough* bandaid) makes this game quite fun, despite how talentless you feel scoring a headshot when the crosshair is above the ememy's left shoulder. I haven't done multiplayer yet, as nary a controller can be found in any charlotte store.:( This shooter will tie me over for now, but developers in general better learn how effectively use the remote in a FPS.
My tip is they have a little chat with Atlas's hardware guy.

man, no. if you swung the wii remote with the same force that you'd swing a golf club you'd hook every single shot out of bounds. and you'd be 20 strokes over at putt putt if you tapped that lightly with a putter.

Nevertheless, it's thoroughly enjoyable, as someone who'd lost/broken/misplaced/had stolen by shifty friends with my old systems, it's very lovely to play some of the classics on a big TV again.

so i have some Wii questions (keep in mind i know next to nothing about this system as I am still rabidly attatched to my gamecube :( )
1. About how much does the Wii cost, and what's it's availability currently? Is it still one of those camp-out situations?
2. What's the average price of a virtual console game?
3. Approximately how many games can you hold on the Wii's virtual console (or whatever it would be called)? Or, about how much memory storage do you have, and how much does the average NES or SNES game use?
4. How much/how available are these additonal controllers?
5. Are there any GC games that for any reason aren't compatible with the Wii? I remember hearing something about this.
6. Are there currently/is anyone aware of any prospects for external storage, in the form of a hard drive, blank minidiscs, or whatever? And how much are those if they exist yet?

1. About how much does the Wii cost, and what's it's availability currently? Is it still one of those camp-out situations?
$250, and it's generally rare, but if you go to about five different stores, you'll probably find one. I recommend getting one from EB or Gamestop and paying $30 for their 1-year replacement plan (their plan covers anything at all you do to the console, up to and including setting it on fire or something).
2. What's the average price of a virtual console game?
NES is $5, Turbo-Graphix is $6, Genesis/SNES are $8, N64 are $10
3. Approximately how many games can you hold on the Wii's virtual console (or whatever it would be called)? Or, about how much memory storage do you have, and how much does the average NES or SNES game use?
I think there are 5 pages of channels, with 12 channels per page. Each VC game uses a channel, and the Wii has several channels dedicated to its various functions, so you can store about 52 VC games. However, you can delete or move VC games to an SD card if you find you're running out of space. If you delete a VC game, you can redownload it later at no charge. I don't remember the Wii's storage space, but i'm reasonably certain you can fill the channels with games and not run out of space.
4. How much/how available are these additonal controllers?
Remotes are $40, Nunchuks are $20, Classic Controllers are $20. You can use a gamecube controller in lieu of the classics if you don't want to pay for a redundant controller, but the Classic Controller has a way bigger D-Pad and feels nicer to me :<
5. Are there any GC games that for any reason aren't compatible with the Wii? I remember hearing something about this.
Not that I'm aware of; The Wii pretty much switches entirely over to Gamecube mode when you play a GC disc; You can't use the Home menu or parental controls or check play times on GC discs. So, I doubt there'd be any compatibility issues.
6. Are there currently/is anyone aware of any prospects for external storage, in the form of a hard drive, blank minidiscs, or whatever? And how much are those if they exist yet?
There're SD-RAM cards you can put in to load pictures & video, and you can also store VC games and savegames on that media.

We'll have a blog on ErickAndEmily (hosted on our own very capable server via Wordpress), but it'll be more about things that are happening to us personally that also have to do with the site, or will contain extra videos or something. Each of the reviews will also have an RSS feed soon, too, which will allow trackbacks and whatnot.
As for other reviewers, they need to be able to physically show up here, as we're expanding our video reviews and also for regular video capturing. However, we'll have a 'reader rating' thing in the future too, where people can give games their own star rating.

I have a question about the wii's disk slot. Do these kinds of slots tend to break down fairly easily? It seems to me that they might, given all the moving parts that are obviously involved. That's why I prefer top-loaders like the Gamecube, but I guess that's just not cool enough for the future the hardware companies think we're living in. :/

I'm concerned about the teensy tiny little D-pad. The Classic controller looks, overall, to be the superior controller, and I will certainly buy it for at least VC games. If I MUST get a GC controller for GC games, I'm sure I'll cheap out and go 3rd party.
Fathom Zero
Feb 13th, 2007, 07:17 PM
How do you go aobut doing that then, Fathom Zero?
You think you can prove me wrong, but you can't.
There's a code that can execute arbitrary code through the Gamecube Action Replay. You get a Gamecube memory card that is modified to take SD cards, not unlike the ones used for the Wii. In fact, you can use the ones made for the Wii.
There's a program called SD Load. It creates a binary file that makes everything work.
1) Download: http://wii-news.dcemu.co.uk/sdload.zip
2) Format the SD card into a FAT or FAT16 format.
3) Inside the .zip file is the SDLOADER binary, among other things. Move that over to the root of your SD card.
4) Grab all of the homebrew/emulators and stick them anywhere you want.
They can be in their own directories as long as SDLOADER.bin remains in the root.
5) Take out the SD Card, put it in the special GC Memory Card.
6) Run the Action Replay.
7) Click ADD NEW GAME. SDLOAD is the game name. Enter "(m)" as the code name, without the quotes.
8) Enter the following code:
7YPR-RKZZ-MH6W5
D26A-PE4J-1XX2W
ZJHY-B1ZH-6P00G
9) Select ADD NEW CODE and name it SDLOAD. Input the following code:
AF4H-JPF5-H1B5J
MVAB-7TQE-ABZPB
V2CK-QQ1A-Y6P72
M5N6-CMMH-9EURT

DUMT-15KR-DXJ8K
JV55-6VF5-2Z02T
D4R8-MVJ5-QGR21
1G3C-APD7-1CUVD
10) Select the code named SDLOAD, check the box next to it, press start, and open and close the disc drive when prompted. SDLOAD starts and WHAM. You have exploited the Gamecube half of the Wii.
I call it a trick because it isn't actually utilizing any exploits in the Wii. It's just running Action Replay from the Gamecube. You can use the same process, I believe, on the Gamecube as on the Wii.
There are SNES, Genesis, MAME, NES, PC Engine, GBC, Dotriem, Chip8, and GBA emulators, as well as ports of Doom and Tetris among other goodies.
I don't know if there's any Wii specific homebrew that works with the Wiimote's abilities, but I think you can use the Wiimote instead of the Gamecube controller with the programs. Don't quote me on that.
Take that, ass.

When are these new colors going to be released? I'm waiting on the black Wii, since I had to miss out on the black Gamecube.

I don't have a Wii of my own yet (yeah, I'm about as rich as your average street corner hobo), but I did get a chance to play one at a Gamestop a few weeks ago. And I was sorely disappointed; it felt like I was waving my arms in front of the TV like an ape as I watched Link do whatever the hell he wanted anyway. This usually included shooting arrows into the ground, and swiveling his head around indiscriminately.
Please for the love of god tell me that was just a shitty store demo, and not what the actual system plays like.

Probably neither. You just suck at the game.
I have Zelda and love it.

You know, not everybody thinks the Wii is the best console, nor the easiest to use, (but that depends on whether or not you've played video games before.)

I call bullshit. Link doesn't swivel his head around with the remote movements.

Hey, it was a few weeks ago. Like I'm going to remember precise details about a game I disliked based upon a few minutes of play? Unless it's a failure on levels previously unseen, like Captain Novolin. And really, it was just control issues with the Wii itself, less than with the game. The camera was jerky, the controls were unresponsive. I was simply asking if this was normal, if it was an issue with demo systems, or whatever.
Though I do clearly remember the only being able to shoot arrows into the ground part. That was pretty irritating.
